With Jerusalem Artichokes and snips. Your guts will enter the new year in fine fettle!

Problem with sprouts is what the British do to them. Stop boiling them to a horrid tasting mush for hours. Proper roast them and they're actually really nice. Even steamed is way more preferable to boiling.

Always remember to put a cross...

...through them on your shopping list.

Leaves more space for kilted sausages...

Prep them (ie base off and then peal a layer or two off, no need for crosses!).
Steam for about 5 mins.
Then allow to cool.
When cool cut them in half.
I then fry some bacon (or pancetta if feeling posh) and throw the cold sprouts in once the bacon is crispy.
a few mins to warm through and get a little brown on the edges and voila... best sprouts ever and minimum fuss

Everything is disgusting about them. The look, smell, taste and aftermath.

My FiL had a meal in a local pub (whose chef happens to be a veteran of Michelin star restaurants) and he complained that the perfectly cooked sprouts were "too hard" 🙄

I think some people just expect them to be boiled until they are green soggy jelly.

Parp indeed. You know one theory is that we’re genetically predisposed to sniffing our own farts as it’s the only way we know what’s going on with our insides #sproutsrule

Nothing wrong with boiling them. Just don't boil them for too long. Catch them when they're still firm, but not hard and they taste great.

No!! I've maintained for years that things have gone the wrong way with sprouts.

You boil them till they're soft cos that's when the sugars start to come out that make them sweet and yummy.
The reason lots of people don't like em is because they're too hard and therefore not sweet.

Trust me, try them soft and then al dente. Massive taste difference.
I get that some people won't like them either way, but plain soft sprouts properly cooked don't need any embellishments.

They taste best steamed, just to the point of softness, no more. After that they turn to horrible mush in short order.. i reckon people dislike them as they are usually boiled beyond and inch of their life.

just peeled 3lbs of the gorgeous green jewels.

Parboil tomorrow then into a sink of cold water (iced if you can risk not having enough for your G&Ts)

Then on the day either chuck back in boiling water for a couple of mins to reheat or poptyping them - but only just before serving, if they stand too long they go bitter.

Back into a pan, lots of butter, black pepper, lid on and shake hard so they start to come apart a bit. Lush!

If you are ever in Alpharetta, Georgia, go to Milton's and order the Kentuckyaki Sprouts. A mind meltingly tasty experience.

As a bonus, the utterly marvellous people at https://whitetailcycles.com are just across the road.
