Obviously it's Mr Outrage from Surrey here, but future Career or not, this isn't on. Drink and drugs are not mitigating circumstances for shit like this, if you did it under the "influence", it still means it's in you to do it in the first place..

Mummy and daddy probably had a word..

Would jail do her any good? I doubt it. I think the media attention has done her future prospects enough damage as it is.

I dont know, I wasnt in the court so dont understand the circumstances. A sensationalised news story doesnt allow me to make an informed decision either way.

I'm sure there is some sensationalism in the story, however the bones of it can't be too far removed.

Don't know the full story. She also stabbed herself, so I'm guessing the ex might have been the final straw in an impending breakdown. Hope they are both okay now.

That better have been an empty jam jar though. Mmmm jam

The kids use jam jars for their drinks nowadays so maybe no jam was harmed in the making of this sensationalist story.

why would i be bitter? I've done alright for myself, so Uni thing is not an issue, nor is her potential wealth. What is an issue is seeing women get batshit crazy violent and then promptly blame it on drugs or booze and get let off. There is zero balance when it comes to stuff like this.

yep read it, still think its wrong. Point being, if the person was of a different background there will have not been a deferred sentence, it would have been straight to custody.

I don't know, only you can explain that.

But the use of 'luv' and the 'Mummy and daddy probably had a word..' line just smacks of bitterness and nastiness. And you do appear to have a chip on your shoulder about your 'class'.

I've done alright for myself, so Uni thing is not an issue, nor is her potential wealth.

But I'm guessing have neither been a drug addict or in an abusive relationship.

You clearly have more details about the case than everyone else.

Really? The Judge has deferred sentencing to see if she gets her shit together rather then sending her straight to prison.

If she doesn't get her shit together she goes to prison, if she does than we have a useful member of society without the expense of imprisonment.

Win win surely?

I don't think we are getting the whole picture here. She's probably a very disturbed individual and the probation / mental health reports have come back with the analysis that jail could possibly send her over the edge.

The only reason its in the papers is cos she is relatively fit. Clickbait 101.

Letting her try to get her drug issues/mental health together before sending her to prison seems sensible if she hasn't got a history of violence/crazy stuff like this.

Regardless of whether sentencing is deferred, delivered or suspended, wouldn't her guilty plea mean she will now have a significant violence conviction which will show up on all future vetting Enhanced Disclosures, which are pretty much universal in responsible positions in clinical and care settings, and you would expect most future employers to be wary of the risk of taking on someone with such a history?

To follow that up, would this not make the idea that she had a bright future as a surgeon impractical as an argument for deferring sentence in itself?

Whoever wrote that piece on the secret barrister website seems almost as guilty of speculation as the tabloid writers...

Conclusion

It is too early to draw any conclusions. That is really the beginning and end of it. But if we must go a little further, I would observe that, although understandably surprising to the non-lawyer, there is nothing on the reported facts of this case to suggest yet that anything is amiss. We will wait and see what September brings (and hope that, given the pre-emptive press rumblings, the judge takes the step of formally publishing his sentencing remarks in full), and reassess then. But it is entirely plausible that this is a sad and difficult case where a talented young woman bearing pains that few of us can imagine acted out in an uncharacteristically raw and violent fashion, in a manner that demands condemnation, but the punishment for which the court will temper with mercy, avoiding the compounded tragedy of extinguishing a bright life in the squalid pits of our rotting prisons.

I think the OP is suggesting others may not get the benefit of getting their shit together.

OP may wish to read this before embarrassing himself any further

Not sure the blog post is quite as clear cut as to achieve that. As it seems to err on the side of speculation itself.

I wonder how her bedside manner will turn out.

On a more serious note, if she's not dangerous to anyone else (any more) what would be the point of a custodial sentence? We arguably incarcerate too many non-violent criminals who then cost the taxpayer money, contribute nothing to society and add to prison over-crowding.

Perhaps she should be given a legal obligation to add a health warning to her Tinder profile.

For balance.

No mention of Oxford or good looks though.

as Jamie more succinctly put it..

Anyway, the "luv" and mummy and daddy "thing", was more to highlight the apparent head start in life and subsequent chucking it down the drain scenario, as there is always some form of cushion there. Up-bringing a caue?- probably a flippant question itself...

So the Burton Mail thinks a steak knife looks like this:

Not trying to be dramatic or anything.

the barrister's speculation lies within the confines of the laws that will have been applied. His conclusions flow from logic and the laws. Not hyperbole and wild allegations of favours and bent judiciary.

yes there are some assumptions as to culpability and harm to arrive at the sentencing guide of a probable <2yr sentence, that then has the capacity to be suspended, and again, the ability to suspend is defined in the guidelines and the facts as they are known meet them.

, this isn't on

I'm willing to bet that this sort of judgement goes on all the time without the papers troubling themselves overmuch. This one is different though, as 1. She is posh, 2. She is attractive (and theres the photo of her in a swimming costume in all the papers) . 3. Oxford university. Which is treble points on red top headline bingo

You're right though, it's not on

I can't square the op's comments about "mummy and daddy" with any facts indicating she's from some privelidged set; her background as far as I have read is one of a drug addict who's been in a former abusive relationship.

She sounds like a troubled individual, with mitigating circumstances (not related to her background and education) which have presumably convinced the judge she's unlikely to re-offend.

I don't have a problem with the sentence, and I can be as chippy as anyone.

No point aiming to be a heart surgeon if you're not prepared to practise

Pretty shocking comment from her defence team. She's a drug user I would have thought that she would be most unsuitable as a doctor / surgeon. Hence jail time is irrelevant to her desired career.

😆

She definitely needs more practice if she's currently hitting the leg.
