My old forerunner is being given to the wifey so I need a new watch.

So far on rides I use my OS app (I pay the subscription so any maps to download) and my phone mounted on the bars. It works well but I'm thinking the fenix 5x might be able to consolidate everything.

Specifically interested whether I have to pay for topo maps or I can use my OS subscription to load up the watch.

The 5x has maps on it already, not sure if you can load os maps on it though.

The maps it has are okay, generally shows roads footpaths bridleway and various other stuff.

it will come with Maps (europe if you buy in europe), but I've just put talkietoaster's free one on there. And also downloaded France, and NYC, for the holidays later in the year from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

The loaded maps are fine - but I wanted contours as well. They'er surprisingly useful given the size of the screen. Better than the usual breadcrumb

talktoaster does a good comparison of the different types of map
