Garmin Epix map issue

So I bought one of those bargain Epix that kept coming up in the PSA thread to replace my old Instinct, but it won't download any maps? I've got it plugged into the wall, the download starts, then at some random point between 2 and 35% I get a red circle and "Map Sync Failed".  It's not the same as if it's lost power (that gives a message saying it's paused and will resume once plugged back in), and it does it regardless of which USB power source I use (Samsung, generic, power bank, laptop etc).

Apps, tracks, routes, locations etc have all transferred onto it, it just cant seem to download the base map.

Any ideas?

Is there any way in the multiple myriad of apps Garmin makes you download (seriously, could they not rationalise the whole express/explore/connect/connectIQ just a bit) where you can download the 12GB map file and then transfer it via the USB instead?

Try a full switch off.  Press and hold the top left (light) button until it turns off. It cycles through a couple of screens including the Garmin assist screen but keep holding it down until it eventually turns off. Then turn it back on again and just download the base map as normal over WiFi.

Mr TWs Fenix had the same issue and that sorted it.

Restarting didn't resolve it, in the end I manged to do it via garmin express on the PC with a cable, but then it only does western Europe.  Which is fine except the watch itself was still trying to download the full europe each time it was plugged in and it wouldn't let me delete / unqueue the full version. So I did a factory reset and did it again via the PC which seems to be fine.
