What with all this WFH malarkey, I am looking at stopping renting an office, and instead building one in the garden. Have any of you Ltd company owners done this ? Any tax implications ? I also assume it can all be done through permitted development, or as it has a “commercial” purpose would you need planning ?

Yeah, thought about this as well, something to combine as a guest room as well for the summer.

Over here you can get something for about 3k UKP, not including footings or installation. I have no idea how well I would be able to work in it during the winter though.

I did briefly consider an insulated container, but whilst I would be fine working in one, I think using it as a guest room might be a bit too much.

From memory when I used to have my own company I seem to remember something about claiming expenses for 'rent' can have capital gains implications of you sell your house. This was several years ago though.

Someone with better knowledge may be able to explain it better!

Certainly thinking about it going forward, looks like both of us will be working from home a couple of days a week.

Have a couple of sheds and a disused vegetable patch that would give us the room.

Maybe a combined office/pain cave.....

I've done it and just bought everything through the business. I'll just sort it out with the accountant at the end of the year as to whether it can be apportioned 100% business use.

As for planning, it's not my main place of work, so I'm not stressing about that.

As an aside, I bought a caravan through the business on the premise that it would save money over staying in hotels - accountant said this was fine, but technically, I'd have to invoice myself from the business if I went away in it for personal use

We bought our office through the business. For accounting purposes it is a temporary structure and the asset value depreciates over 10 years.
