At the moment on the footprint of the old garage is a greenhouse (knocked down and cleared) and a large shed (on its last legs).

I was thinking of a shed (with windows on one side and a door on the end) to replace on this space. Not to house a car- but to keep weights and other stuff in.

Wood? Or bricks? What are the approx costs? I was thinking 3k for a brick built structure? (using finger-in-the wind/pluck out of the air)

I've been looking at this as I'm moving house next year and I may need to build something. http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bikegeneral-workshopcabinshedgarage-arrghhh

Brick built I think £3k is very optimistic. Maybe £10k?

Cheltenham 🙂

There's bound to be a custom-built shed type place near you though.

🙂

If you think what I paid was expensive, the original quotes I got for it as a turn-key were about twice as much as it cost me to part DIY....

prefabs - look on gumtree - folks will give them away for free if you dismantle and collect.

20ft x 8 ft from wood for 800 wouldnt be too hard IF the hard standing was already there - but i would lay 2 course brick round the bottom first.

why brick ? cant you do single course block and render with a corrugated tin(with insulation) roof - much cheaper if your thinking in the region of 3k.

Look on gumtree for some matching doors and windows - Ive picked them up in the past for projects on the cheap - usually for collection or a very nominal fee.

no it was a very fair price for something thats built to a better standard than my house...... but thats not to say it wasnt overkill for a shed 😀

What about a converted container? Or convert yourself?
I would have thought £5-£8k for brick, as you would need decent foundations (if you dont it will crack). Wood has more flex so differential settlement would be less of an issue

I've been looking at this:

I can't get a brick built structure as my foundadtions are not strong enough (8" hardcore with 6" rebarred concrete), it's 17' by 14'.

For me I want no windows and no condensation plus I want it secure so..

Pre-built latvian wooden shed ~4K

Pre-cast concrete shed with some insulation but doesn't quite fit the base. 3.8K

Custom built farm metal shed with insulated roof - 4K

Local built shed - 3K

Then extra insulation, lights and power even more.

So I think I'm going self build.

coupla rows of brick (or 1 high of those grey fellas), 35mm barrel board, vapour wrap and insulation, security door and EPDM roof (probably cold roof) on top with all the trimmings is going to cost 2.8K.

I'm ireland though and UK prices/choice are way way different.

I had a custom built 8x12 Heavy Duty Shed done With 18mm Marine ply floor and roof etc
Double heavy duty doors and 2 non opening windows and that was £775 built, delivered and erected on the base I had prepared.

But I had quotes locally up to £2.5K for the same thing, so pays to shop around.

I was going to line it anyway so it didn't need Planed timber uprights etc, Sawn is cheaper just not as nice to the touch 😉

EDIT:

And I would have struggled to self build it for less ( I priced it up both ways)

It was a bit more I think, but that was also to demolish and remove the old asbestos garage.

I'm sure Marcus had his prefab garage built for less than 2k

Whatever you do, I recommend you do not use this place: http://urbanforest-timberbuildings.co.uk/Urban_Forest_Timber_Buildings.html

I wish I had used this stuff: http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/mvf/info/farming/Dungwalling

Works out at £3 + vat per metre and at 2" thick it will be pretty secure!

We just built a timber garage with up and over door.
£3300 for garage plus hardcore/cement for slab.
Looks nice though.

Hora, if you're in Cardiff I can give you the name/number of an excellent brickie/plasterer who did mine in block - 15"x 7" (or so) and is very good value. I can't remember but well under £600 I'm sure.

I used my old back door and window cos I was renovating my house. Make sure there's a decent pitch and do your own rafters and corrugated roof.

Tidy but as he would say.
