A friends boys came over yday, and after supper we played Portal 2 on the Xbox.
It was tremendous fun for us all, and it made me curious what else exists like that? There is an Xbox One here and a pretty modern gaming pc.
Anyone got any recommendations for similar puzzle solving games?
Thanks
Ian
Have a look at the Talos Principle. Was going to suggest my other favourite Anti Chamber but not available on XBox afaict.
Is 2-player co-op a requirement?
Also, how old are they?
No single player is fine. They all worked cooperatively voucing ideas from the sofa. They are yr 10, yr7 and yr 3.
Have gaming pc as well as xbox One so either platform.
@sirromj both your suggestions look ace!
Thanks guys
No single player is fine.
That gives you a lot more options. I'll get back to you in a bit, just prepping Sunday tea.

Portal 2 excels as a 2P game. If you're happy with single player there's always the original Portal.
The Lego games are pretty puzzly.
They are yr 10, yr7 and yr 3.
Can you put that into real money for me?
The Stanley parable is quite cheap and seriously good.
Tip.. Don't read any online spoilers, just play it. It's a single player game but would lend itself well to sofa gaming with friends if you catch my drift.
It's a pc game (HL2 mod originally) but presumably its on xbox too.
Unravel 2 is a good co-op two player game, The first one is single player only afaik.
If you're after mayhem then get Overcooked. It's not a puzzle game but it is a lot of fun.
Far, changing tides is getting good reviews. I haven't played it yet but definitely on the gamepass list.

That's actually the sequel to far lone wind, which is an awesome game. Single player but its more a puzzle game so would also lend itself to couch gaming
Sadly, there's nothing quite as good as Portal 2, although that's probably just due to Cave Johnson quotes and Stephen Merchant.
Portal 2 is great, and the coop aspect is really good, but if youre ok with a single player experience.
Portal 1 is sublime. you might have kinda spoilt the story a bit if youve played portal 2, and im sorry for that cause dropping into it blind when it first came out was such a great experience. I seem to recall i played it in one sitting. I just couldnt put it down.
If youre ok with adding a bit of combat and Murder-Death-Kill. Get Dishonoured.
Fan flipping tastic. Some great puzzles that dont feel like puzzles, based around a variety of powers that are of a similar ilk to Portals.
Dishonoured 1 is great. play it first for sure.
Dishonoured 2 builds on it and has a couple if really stand out levels in it.
(EDIT: sorry, re read the post, probably not for younger kids)

Well, the kids maybe a bit young for throat-slicing, I think.
I love Dishonoured 2 in stealth/no kills mode, it's a real challenge, but even choking out your enemies might not fit the family-friendly bill. 🙂
Plus there are rats, bloodflies and gruesome zombie folk!
I would recommend Limbo and Inside, a couple of side-scrolling, brilliant puzzle games, but even they are fairly nightmare-inducing in places.
Rime is a lovely little puzzle game. Surprisingly poignant, if you simply take a punt on the Zelda-like visuals and don't read any synopses online. Not sure about xbox, but it's definitely on Steam.
I wish Portal 2 was available on modern machinery. I've just revivificactionalized my xbox 360 just to play it again 🙂
Human Fall Flat gives a lot of the co-op puzzle solving thing. Played quite a bit over lockdown with some friends - voice chat going, just working our way through the worlds figuring out what we needed to move or jump on or get to in order to keep progressing.
The Overcooked games are fun too. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a good cartoony space shooter which might appeal, up to 4 players on the same screen co-operating to succeed.
Unravel 2 is a good co-op two player game, The first one is single player only afaik.
'stringy' as my 7 year old calls it...
we've been playing this for a few years now...
Completed it, but it's such a lovely game to go back to over and over...
I love playing 'stringy' with her..great father/daughter time 🙂
DrP
OK.
Quantum Conundrum is the closest Portal-a-like I can think of.
Limbo and Inside were mentioned above, these are both great but the cartoony instadeath might be a bit full-on for the youngest.
I've no idea if it runs on modern hardware, but Braid is a stone cold classic puzzler, it's superb.
A mate of mine has been raving about Volume, it's by the guy who made Thomas Was Alone (probably also worth a look at TBH) but you'll need to go to the PC for that one.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a great co-op. That needs two players, one is looking at a bomb with various dials and MacGuffins, the other has the defusal manual which contains instructions like "cut the red wire, unless there's six wires in case cut the blue wire". It's an exercise in effective communication and it's a lot of fun. Again, I don't know if it's on Xbox but it's on pretty much everything else, I played it with a laptop and a printout of the manual.
Or you could of course get them on to 'proper' classic puzzle games. I think Day of the Tentacle may be on Gamepass currently?
Oh, 'Splosion Man is multiplayer co-op puzzly platformer, should appeal to a teenager's test-pilot reactions but again it was a 360 title, dunno if it works on newer consoles.
Human fall flat was my first thought.

Bang on. Cave Johnson quote are hillarious.
All right, I've been thinking when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down- with those lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns down your house.
"In case you got covered in that repulsion gel here's some advice the lab boys gave me *flips through notes* DO NOT GET COVERED IN THE THE REPULSION GEL. We haven't nailed down exactly what element it is, but it's a lively one, and it does not like the human skeleton."
Thanks everyone, thats ace!
I now have lots of stuff to research and lots of the games look brilliant. Im looking forwards to some buying and then playing them with the boys!
