I don't normally do this, but jeeezus, could it be any more patronising? I kind of understand the reasoning behind the facile, clickbait headline, but do we really need to be addressed like a class of slightly backward five-year-olds?

Meanders off muttering darkly about the standards of modern online journalism...

I thought that too, it reads like something from the Newsbeat section on the BBC News.

And don't get me started on the use of the awful 'reached out' construction... It's almost impossible to read without hearing it in a slightly nasal American drawl. Please stop it 🙁

https://singletrackworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/macclesfield-forest-trails-could-be-closed-for-good-if-you-ignore-this/

An abbreviated version runs: Macc Forest closed until further notice due to storm damage. United Utilities, the owners, are assessing the situation. Meanwhile some naughty people are ignoring the closure and risk ending up with a tree landing on their heads as a result.

Please stay away until the area is officially re-opened or United Utilities - according to the article anyway - may close trails in the forest permanently.

There has also been 'reaching out' to local mountain bike clubs, but let's draw a veil over that eh?

Go and stand in the corner until you can behave properly. And write 100 times 'I must not walk away muttering darkly'.

I didn't even know Macclesfield had a forest or trails. That must have been how Betty got so sweaty, riding those trails!!

Well in colcusion

Hopefully yes, but United Utilities are concerned that certain members of the public, including mountain bikers and other cyclists, aren’t taking their advice and are ignoring notices not to use the forest.

United Utilities has reached out to local cycling clubs in an effort to spread the closure details, but it appears that their pleas are falling on deaf ears and now a permanent trail closure could be on the cards.

So to sum up;

If you see a notice stating that a trail is closed don’t be a “Richard” and ignore it or you could ruin it for everyone.

Yes if people are ignoring closed signs then they do need to be treated like 5 year olds.

Just the side with the summit benches? What about the side up to Charity lane?

I'm talking about the way the article's written rather than the sentiment.

I went up Hacked Way, through the permissive bridleway and up to the middle of Charity and the only sign I saw was closing the fireroad down to Leather Smithy from just below where the permissive bridleway joins the fireroad. (known as Blair Witch).

Correctly me if I'm wrong but isn't it almost impossible to do a good macc forest ride without going on footpaths anyway...

So it doesn't make any actual difference they make it more closed

all I can say is if your after the off piste stuff don't bother at all, its ****ed, is the only way I can put it, I can see why they've closed it off, the fun flowy off piste is no more, hopefully over time it will manage to evolve into something new but believe me when I say its not worth it

as alexsimon - you can go up hacked way and still do charity and bottom of the oven, but pointless heading back into the forest (although charity as of Tuesday night still had snow drifts on, that were like concrete!)

that last storm has absolutely ruined most of the forest, nothing like ive seen before, its sad to see it to be honest, very disheartening from a mtb'ers point of view as spring is coming and the trails just start to get good again

I would personally although it reads rather patronising, actually listen and take note not to bother for the foreseeable, I'm pretty local and its so easy for me to ride it, but I wont be doing for god knows how long 🙁

Can we get this back on topic and stop this chatter about the actual issue and concentrate on the way the article is written please? I fear that BWD may blow a fuse otherwise.

😉

I'm fine thanks, Mark. I just think a news article should be succinct and easy to read. But on the plus side, starting this thread has drawn attention to the actual issue covered by the piece. However I do apologise if I was unfair. I was genuinely trying to be constructive and helpful, I'm just not very good at it.

I'd be interested in knowing more about United Utilities' threat to close the trails permanently btw. Presumably they can't bar access to public rights of way regardless of anything else. How was the 'threat' made.

Sorry again if I rubbed anyone up the wrong way. I'm reaching out now to apologise 🙂

OK, seeing as it's going home time, you can come out. Think about what you did and make sure it doesn't happen again. And watch out for 'widowmakers' if you're riding in Macc Forest 🙂

I was just looking at a newish UK based off-road cycling website.

A couple of their headlines:

First look: Kona Rove AL.

New Calibre Bossnut Evo released today.

Simple, concise, to the point.

You wouldn't believe how refreshing this  middle aged man in the Burnley area found the whole thing.

🙂

I actually went on to read the articles, whereas the headlines on 'our' front page make me feel a bit dirty. And not in a good way. 🙂

I'm actively making a point of avoiding the more clickbait article headlines and reading (even if I'm not that interested in the content) the less clickbait ones in the hope I can contribute to a change in style (unlikely I know but if everyone did it.......)
