assumes you have a recovery partition.

If not I can probably find/post you a Dell Win 7 disc (no code), that I'm told will work with any dell code*.
I should be testing that theory at some point this weekend.

Is there no recovery partition? I thought Dell shipped all laptops with a Windows 7 installation image on the HD for this reason.

There will be a system in place to do a factory-fresh* re-install. Check the manufacturers web site and it should give step by step instructions.

* NOTE - not the same as a fresh install - the manufacturer almost certainly will have loaded bloatware on to the machine to start off with. CrapCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ will help you to identify what starts up automatically and stop it from doing so.

NOTE 2 - make sure that you have everything you need fully backed up before doing a re-install.

This.

and then do another backup to a different set of media, just to be sure.

use windows explorer - look at the recovery partition - there's normally an app or somethign you can run that'll manage the process for you.
