My freelander 1 diesel L series 2.0td engine is dead and i need a replacement,the engine code is 20T2N and i see other rover diesel cars with the same code engine but wondered if they will fit as i can't find a replacement engine local that i can look at .

speaking of getting rid of the ird i have read about people who have removed the prop and blanked of the ird prop hole but can you get rid of the ird box and put a driveshaft in its place which goes from the gearbox to the off side wheel like on a standard 2wd car.

No idea, i only ever dropped the rear prop and run them front wheel drive when the ird went t*ts...

Cant imagine the block would be any different, although werent there two versions of the 2.0 diesel ?
Yours isnt a TD4 I presume...

Mine is the first engine they put in the freelander diesel called the L SERIES DIESEL ENGINE.
