Noticed today that a pond not too far from me is teeming with the things, loads are a good size (2"-4"). Has anyone tried them, or would it be like chewing an inner tube.

Loads of other stuff around today too, sloes, haws, blackberry, hazel, chestnuts.

I wouldn't. Filter feeders from a pond will be full of nasties IMHO.

If you really wanted to try them, purge them in running water for a week or so.

In your very good opinion, I reckon.

What's this ? Pond life ? Berries ? Nuts ? Are you getting ready for when the Tories are back in government ?

if it is a pond with no inlet / outlet there will be no flushing of nasties.

depending on the size of the pond fish/birds etc all can harbour some nasty bugs indeed.

the nastiest water i have ever tested was a fountain with the pump switched off and birds sh*&ing in it.

Freshwater pearl mussels are a protected species - you'd need to be sure what species they are.
