hi got a 53 mondeo the boot decided today it wouldnt lock shut . A bit of rope is not much of much use where i live :-). So anything it might likely be before i get done over at the ford garage in the morning. Providing its still there that is 🙁
Lock/ Unlock the car when the boot is open and up in the air, leave it a couple of seconds before shutting it, see if that works, as it's a 2 stage lock or something.
We had it on our mondeo I got so pissed off that I put a dent in the boot with my foot, then it seem to work, never happend again.
Also check that the catch is returning properly and put some grease on it if required.
Sounds like a faulty door lock actuator, should be about an hours labour if it is, 😯
Tried GT85 sprayed inside the latch then repeatdly use a flat headed screwdriver to push shut and open? It worked on an old car of mine.
Rope it shut from the inside so its not so obvious 🙂
Also I've read on fordmondeo.org that it can sometimes be the boot switch. Unplug the boot switch (presumably behind the trim on the boot door) and as a temporary fix, you should still be able to open the boot via the boot unlock button on the dash and also via the 3rd button on the remote fob. I had an estate of that year and you could also the key upwards alongside the boot release to open the boot.
exactly the same as my 53 mondeo!
I'm only driving places where I know I park up against something really big and really stationary (it's an estate, so this is an better fix than it would be if it was a saloon)
A man in a garage says I need a new boot latch assembly. Ford says £65 inc vat. ebay says £65 inc postage.

You could what?
cheers chaps i just took it to work and stripped it, it seems to be the motor solenoid but it seems ford only sell the entire lock i think i will nip down the scrappers tomorrow 😉 thanks all
mick, if you're still reading:
Do you mean it's not closing shut so it's only gravity holding it shut, or not locking so you can open it without a key?
hi ed mailed you mate
Ned, sorry, I meant you could insert the key vertically next to the boot release to open it, useful if your spare key isn't a remote.
insert it where spooky ? I have no keyhole
I cant ever remember key holes in those mondeo boots! Sure its not a focus? 😆 Almost definatly the tailgate microswitch, the button you press under the trim with the numberplate lamps in. They get full of water. the new switch is modiifed with a bit of silicon sealant.
No, on my 53 reg estate, you could insert the key into a hidden keyhole alongside the electric button that opened the boot. I only found out about it as there was a supplementary bit of paper describing it as it was an addition since the manual was printed. The actual bit of paper showed a Mondeo Hatchback so assume it was also added on those.
Edit: Actually, my car was an 03. It was one of the last before the range got the mild facelift (new dash with Sony radio's etc rather than the traditional big button ford radio, and the silver trim around the grill). If your 53reg is the facelift, maybe the keyhole was removed?
ah yes its gone 🙁 good old improvements lollol
my rear lock was fixed under warranty (54 plate) so there may be some sort of help out there even if its well out of warranty now.
Search for similar problems and have a nice word with your dealer to see if there could be some assistance.
Some manufacturers will help and I once got a head gasket done free of charge on an out of warranty Saab 9-5, not much out of warranty like but out all the same.
Working for a ford dealer, i should say you will have naff-all chance under warranty! You would be lucky to get it done at 4 years old!
Ha! just taken mine apart: trim off, assembly unplugged, unsrewed, taken inside. Solenoid is stuck in "open" position and won't allow catch to engage and lock shut. Solenoid unscrewed from assembly and treated to mild swearing and an inquisitive knife blade. Prising action on one corner releases stuckness and actuator whirrs back out to shutting position.
Pushed it in and out a few times: apparently not stuck any more!
All now back on the car and working fine. Left the trim off for now and the toolkit in the car, just in case!
Will look around for a spare from a scrappies too.
mi@k: cheers for the email, and cheers for the impetus to get it sorted!
53 plate, big button ford radio and no keyhole here, in case anyone cares particularly.
