It might have changed in recent years, but not long ago one-way tickets were 70-80% the cost of returns.

When I booked a Flight to Australia a few years ago they couldn't offer and open-ended return - I had to book my return for 12 from the date I booked (which was as long as they offered in advance) knowing that I would unlikely fly that day and then pay a fee of £60 to move the return date. I might have lucked out because purely by chance I moved from flight from a non-peak time of year to the one of the most peak times for the £60, if I had booked that return date originally the flight would have cost a lot more.

I would recommend using STA travel, they know all this stuff insideout and offer great advice, normal high street travel agents are next to useless unless it's a package holiday

Check visa requirements as well. Some require evidence of return or onward travel.

Not sure if still the case, but Indian visa's require a different sized photo than normal...

You can get a good price one way ticket, times have moved on. No penalty from my experience. Pictures for Indian visas changed years ago. The normal photo booths do the Indian visa photos. Best to get the online visa done asap. It's a pain.

If you have doubts airline ticket prices just use sky scanner etc. It's easy to fire in your requirements and get a quote.

Back in the day (about 10 years ago) I was travelling and it worked out cheaper to buy a ticket with the longest return date you could get then just change it as you needed. Open tickets were far more. Solved visa issues regarding onward tickets too.
