About time! Just come back from Germany where I met a couple of guys from Homs who had been living in my parents' town for 7 months. My mum had them mowing the lawn and helping out - she was slightly embarrassed that they were totally over-qualified - but they were happy to do any work on offer and just glad to be there rather than in Homs. Ilmenau is a small, peaceful, rural university town (which happens to have a European Championships downhill track... but I don't think they were there for that 😉 )

The town had a 'Refugees welcome' day in one of the local venues - lots of food for locals and new arrivals alike. Lots of people turning up just to be friendly.

It made me feel a bit embarrassed at how little we're doing.

Very impressive, Shame we'd just have a 'Refugees Go Home' banner draped across the road in the UK....

if they apply for asylum here, we'll ban them from taking work. Because that's what we do with people going through the asylum process. Probably just so DM-types can froth at the mouth about them living off hand-outs.

Seriously though, there will be a camp just a few miles up from us soon, but for now were planning on doing logistical things as no financial stability.

Met vriendelijk groet, Sam

I think it's really important that we cast aspersions on rando Syrians about whom we know nothing instead of looking at the proven tax tactics of massive transnational corporations like Amazon, Apple and Google.

Last week in Bristol:

Lots of negativity in the press but plenty of actual people are quite happy to help and welcome.

There are 64.1 million people in the UK (Ref Wiki here ).

That few groups of people are not exactly representative of 64.1 million UK population is it?

They can welcome the world as much as they like but please do not use the public money ... use their own money. 🙄

Hey, unfitgeezer has done no such thing - he's pointed out that he's "ecstatic" over the arrival of Syrian war refugees.

Don't you believe him?

Are you casting aspersions on unfitgeezer's warm generous character?

Is the number of Syrian refugees in the UK a big concern for people who live in Thailand?

Hold that bigotry tight unfitgeezer and never let it go, it will keep you warm at night, in the cold dark winter of Britain's decline as it swamped in a sea of endless foreign types

Crikey! My understanding is that he is happy (his positive statement) but you read it completely differently (negative) ...

Who is right in interpretation? 😯

Not Thailand KB Borneo, Chewwy is an economic migrant from Borneo.

He came to the UK purely for personal economic gain but begrudges refuge being offered to those fleeing war.

Looks like there's a misunderstanding of the definition of 'bigot' going on.

I hope they paid tax on the money they earnt... So they are used to paying it here...should they wish to get a job...

Can't see any bigotry going on there, just a statement.

Hopefully they will cost the government and us tax payers a ton of money.

That will then encourage future governments and voters not to go round unthinkingly messing up other countries, and generally having a crap foreign policy.

That's not what the term bigot was used in reference to.

Well said.

It's funny how the consequences of war only become an issue when they end up on our doorstep.

Yes, I am. I am a legal alien not fleeing war nor being hunted by the head hunter tribes (nice people they are).

Yes, purely for economic gains because you lot refuse to work as low ranking ZM bureaucrat and the govt has no choice but to recruit me to keep you lot in check. But I get shite pay though if that makes you happy ... 😛

... but begrudges refuge being offered to those fleeing war.

I don't begrudge them being offered a safe heaven I just thought you have done it wrongly.

Respect the authority!
Respect the bureaucratic rules!
Not bend them as you wish! (I learned this from British bureaucrats above me btw as I was told)

Also who is that German Angela woman to dictate her terms to other EU nations? Change the rules as she wishes? So why the hell am I following all the ZM bureaucratic rules for?

You (generally speaking) taught me to be a ZM bureaucrat by telling me to follow rules but you break that rules yourself? Ya, right ... now I see, now I see ... 😯

While racists bigots are pretty vocal I think they still represent the minority in this country.

Maybe a different word required then.

a ?person who has ?strong, ?unreasonable ?beliefs and who ?thinks that anyone who does not have the same ?beliefs is ?wrong:

(from Cambridge Dictionaries Online)

Mind you, I'm not an English teacher. (but my stepdaughter is) 8)

Do you actually oppose democracy? 😯

64.1 million people in UK and you cannot distinguish between the silent and the vocal ones? 😯

If you look at the photos posted above could you not see who are the most vocal? 😯

Could you post some photos of those who oppose them? 😯

Just being selfish...
That's better.

Pretty much all of us have family which we care about, but some of us have a little of something else...a conscience.

Not really. You don't have a conscience because you do as you like and as you see fit by brushing off those that you think have different views to yours.

If that is conscience then we are doomed for good. 🙄

Yes, thanks.

Being out of the UK means that what information i get is via newspapers and the internet. If i was still working in the uk i coild still have the pleasure of listening to the bigotted comments of my colleagues, students and parents or the more accepting ones of my friends.
