Can anyone point me to somewhere that does decent chinos other than Gap?

My usual work trouser is a pair of Gap straight fit chinos. Used to be the slim fit ones until they shunted everything one fit to the right (so slim became straight, skinny became slim etc). Still wear them but they only do beige and dark blue in straight fit. Size is 34/32 or thereabouts.

The others have a wider range of colours, but they're not really suitable for work - at least for me.

Crew are fine but limited colour selection and £££, even with 20%, Joules are too skinny fit (they clung to my calf), White Stuff have funny pocket covers and £££.

M&S, Sam Windsor, Charles Tyrwhitt etc are all a bit 'old man'. I had to make an emergency trouser purchase and went to Next in my haste - fine if you paint your trous on and carry a manbag and say 'bruv'...

Used to have some good Boden ones but they're now £££ as well.

Basically I just want a few pairs of 'normal' (not fashion) chinos, less than £40 a pair if poss.

Any ideas?

I use non iron ones from lands end, but if you put CT in a box labelled "old man" I guess you would these as well.

Hmm, can't get their website to show me anything other than 29in waist trousers..

Will keep trying though - thanks.

Just keep going to Gap. I gave up trying to find another place that did them in a style that fitted my legs and had a long enough in seam. Mind you, I only really have three pairs at work

M&S here and I don't think they are paticularly old-man, like most of their clothes.  There is a range of chinos in the shop though.  First time I've not felt the need to change out of work clothes as soon as I can.

A bit £££ but Spoke London are really great - and do 3 different “fits” - build b works well for cyclist thighs.

M&S here as they do a long leg for me.

I like the lighter fabric of my Next ones, but you are right about the snug fit on cyclists calves and thighs (swoon...)

I've given up on the under £40 bit and also gone with Spoke. Previously tried Gap, CT, Lands End, and Spoke are better in every way - cut, fit, fabric and service. But £89 is a lot.

Spoke are great but expensive.  Haven’t bought anything in M&S for a few years but the stuff in their “Autograph” range used to be better quality and design without being £££

Spoke are ok, but found even the ‘C’ fit tight and I’m certainly not Chris Hoy-shaped.

Large M&S should give a fair choice at the stated budget.

Nah, surely if it was the most STW-ish post, it should have been asking for hand-curated artisan-crafted renewable niche trousers. Perhaps made up in Yorkshire..<snip - Mods>

Ahem.

+1 on spoke, but they are £89 a pair unless you can find a bargain code.

Primark, stretch straight fit.

I used to spend a fortune on jeans and trousers, idiot, 8-10 quid at Primark, and last as well as any other high street places IME.

Leaves me money for fun stuff.

I've got a few pairs of Levi 511s in non-denim/chino style material. Stretchy ones available too.

Bit Brexit you mean 🤮

Pasty WMAM trews.

Try Hugo Boss or Rapha.

Fat Face, Joules have been ok, Next one's keep shedding buttons for some reason.  I might give Volcom or Anne's Cottage one's a try as the chino shorts I've had have been fab and lasted well.

I've got some of the Community Clothing chinos. They are not skinny fit or too old man looking.

Arket if you find they fit you, basically the posh bit of H&M.

they look a cut above the usual high street cheapies and not much more £

their shirts don't fit me unfortunately as they looked good for the money too.

A -1 for Spoke from me. Nothing particularly good about them, the colour faded loads and the pockets wore through in a couple of months.

Picked up some Next ones that have a bit of stretch (useful for thighs) for £20 that have already far outlasted them.

dockers for me. been trying to find a decent pair for a while now. for work and play dockers do a good range and seem to be hard wearing. they do older style smart ones, in between smart casual types and more relaxed types with zip coin pockets etc.

there are often good deals on them direct from the website. I found a few types I like and bought some in the sale. free delivery and returns IIRC.

I bought a pair of Spoke Fives in January in their sale. At first they were great but after not much wear the crotch is starting to wear through. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for them!!

£15 M&S chinos for the win! Just bought 2 pairs and they fit far better than anything I've had before.

chinos for work here too. cant fault em. always feels a shame to be ass polishing in my good jeans...

i get mine from Next. they do the stretch fit chinos in straight, slim and skinny fit. i go up a size in the skinny and they feel really well fitted -a big big on waist when theyre broken in but nothing a belt doesnt fix.

£22 a pop now, they have just gone up. buy them in ink, black and grey. they dont stand the test of time but for 22 dabs im not arsed....

M&S are grandad kecks
