I like a good list as much as the next guy, so on discussing 'favourite ever movies' recently I've always had Silence of the Lambs right up around my top 10.
Until, I watched it a few weeks ago for the first time in probably 15 years.
I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much.
I was actually gutted. I found some of the dialogue hard work and several of the close ups uncomfortably cheesy. I also found TRH Hopkins a bit, hammy.
I'd still say it's a 'really good' film, but disappointingly it's probably fallen out of my top 10/50/possibly 100.
Another experience of this has been Star Wars.
After lauding it for my whole life I gave it a watch several years ago, again, for the first time in years. It has many classic moments and drips with nostalgia, but it's not one of the 'best ever'.
I'm scared to watch Gladiator now..
Any similar experiences?
"Hard To Kill". Its just not the same now....
The Thing
I've been trying to get the wife to watch it for donkeys years and she finally relented a few weeks ago.
I hadn't seen it in 25+ years, and it was really rather rubbish - great for it's time (and awesome when I saw it on video in the early 80s at 14!), but yep - effects and film-making have moved on a lot.
Definitely Star Wars, I was very excited to introduce it to the kids but.....its dire, so many holes in it its truly terrible. This coupled with the when episode I came out and coming out the cinema kind of in denial that it was as bad.
Loads of old martial arts films, I had loads of Golden Harvest and Shaw brothers stuff but its a trudge to sit through one these days. Enter the Dragon still cuts it though.
I'm scared to watch Ferris Bueller, though happily Predator and First Blood still work.
Not 100% relevant but I've learned to be careful 'introducing' Mrs Pondo to past classics as her indifference can lead me to see them through her eyes and realise how weak they are. Star Wars is the class-leading example of this, I may never watch the first six again.
When someone pointed out to me how crap the Stormtroopers are even the new films need a bit of leniency.
no idea why you all have a problem with Star wars ]]Its dated in parts but have you seen clash of the titans from the same period for example?
Still a good film IMHO
Condorman.
Star Wars is a ****ing fairy tale. No more no less. 🙄
The Stormtroopers are hopeless but watch most of the 60's and 70's WW2 stuff and they are also equally hopeless in those movies.
There was a film I saw as a kid - Restless Natives, I remember at the time it was brilliant. Tried for years when I was a bit older to get it on DVD but it had not been released. It was never on the telly either so I had built it up in my memory for years as being one of the best films ever. Then one day a DVD of it appeared, man I wished I never bought it, the film in my head was way better.
Star Wars Lucas Pissed About With Versions are hard to watch now. Wasn't a fan at the time anyway, but the CGI mess has dated worse than the original films. Thankfully there are Harmy's Despecialised versions.
Oddly, and annoyingly, watched Airplane for the first time in yonks recently. Glorious HD on the big telly and so on. Was still funny, but I wasn't entirely loving it. Sort of mild chuckles at the so famous gags, but not laugh a minute. I think I OD'd on it years back having watched it way too much.
I suspect I may feel the same about Pulp Fiction. I'd watch that endlessly and loved it every time. I'm reluctant to see it again.
I've got the same feeling about Point Break. When I first watched it it was awesome and I'm a little scared of watching it now in case it's pants and it kills that memory. Tell me it is still awesome

That's a blast from the past! A classic scottish cult film, everybody thinks it was amazing. I think I'll just leave it at that! 😆
Edit, trailer is awesome! 😆
Alien for me I think. I was so knocked out with it at the time and watched it too much I think when the DVD came out. Tried to watch it a while back and found it a bit jaded.
Judging by the Star Wars comments earlier, maybe that's a bit of a problem with many successful films which start a franchise.

It's still awesome
I actually Alien has got better with time!
Films age shocker
Edit, Hopkins hammy, never....!
Point Break is still good. I never liked Hopkins as Lector, he’d have been caught in the first week hamming it up like Dick Dastardly. I always thought Brian Cox in Manhunter played it better, a much more believable performance. Film is still good too IMO.
