During one of the increasingly random conversations Mrs LJ and I had over Tea tonight, I made the bold statement "There are no (good) fat drummers" and for once, I seemed to have her stumped. Please help her out as I'm impossible when I'm smug.

Seriously? Obnoxious, certainly.
Fat though?

Sorry j_d, no offence meant 😀
none taken 🙂
You've only got my word that I'm any good - but have a listen here: http://www.amazingtunes.com/users/thewickeffect and make up your own mind
If I was / when I become(!) a professional drummer, playing day in day out, I doubt I'd be quite the size I am. It's quite a good workout, for your arms & upper body anyway.
I guess you've never been to a Walter Trout concert then? I didn't catch the guys name, but he was absolutely awesome (as was Sammy Avalon on the keyboards).
Gene Hoglan is an amazing drummer, technically skilled and VERY fast double bass.
Some fantastic drum work on Death's last 2 proper albums.
I've never got the hang of double kick. I guess I'm too one-footed. Good foot technique can get round that to a degree, but if you're doing fast sixteenths on the kick(s) then a double drum or double pedal setup is essential.
But you can hear from our music that I don't particularly need to be good on the double kick, it's not that kind of music
Just had a look at Gene Hoglan and must say smugness has subsided somewhat. Can't imagine why Mrs LJ didn't get that one, what with her being such a speed metal freak and all.
John Bonham is one of the best drummers ever and he was no sylph.
me too.
Dennis Chambers
Buddy Miles
Billy Cobham
Think the drummer out of My Morning Jacket is quite large...and he's also an awesome drummer.
Barry White, yes THAT Barry White - the walrus of love.
He was a session drummer before turning to singing - played on I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller Four amongst others.

I like that.
Bonzo was a bit chubby.
Scotty Pearson from Elemeno P is well portly!
Carter Beauford while not being a full on pie man is definitely on the chunky end of the scale. For some reason a lot of the gospel / RnB / soul style drummers verge on the scale tippers side than weight weenie.
i like the music john 😉 very editors sounding
Slightly off topic but that Wick Effect guitarist sounds good :-)WickEffect
Bun E Carlos from Cheap Trick is a bit portly.
Jet Black as pictured above is a whale but rock solid behind the kit.
Rammsteins video for Keine Lust he is a right bloater in that 😉
cheers mi©k, glad you like it 🙂
we've had that comparison a few times now, don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, as I'm not familiar with their work yet
Poison Idea -one of the best punk/hardcore bands ever and the fattest!! pig champion the guitar player was 36st when he died.
Nick Barker can make a right racket.
