At least it does for F1 nerds like me. Its all going on at Valencia, except the new Red Bull which we have to wait for. The Mercedes is a mean looking thing. The Renault on the other hand has looks only its mother will love. The McLaren looks like a space rocket. The Ferrari is underwhelming just from a casual observation. No sponsors for either Renault or Sauber - oh dear. Also, none of the new teams have made it. Oh double dear.

Yep, at last a use for Twitter to get all the latest on what's going on!

I think the Ferrari looks the neatest of the lot, Merc is a bit unusual, McLaren seems over complicated and the Renault... well, I thought last year's was ugly and they've certainly been busy over the winter.

Thought Renault was secure with the Genii cash, so they're not in dire need of sponsors just yet, but Sauber looks awfully bare. Campos is the only one of the new teams that I think is in dire straits - USF1 and Virgin are making noises about being ready to run.

Had to check when the first race was yesterday. My 8 year old has stopped all other topics of conversation already; F1 & the 2010 season, thats it.

PS you will be glad to know that Michael Schumacher will be 41 tomorrow.. I know I was delighted to hear it at about 07.00 yesterday.

F1? Isn't that won or lost depending how big your budget is and whether you can afford the best electronics? What about drivers not having team orders or races being decided in the pits, what about overtaking, two or three people dicing for the lead. Tell you what, watch Motogp, World Superbikes or British Superbikes for some real racing!!!!

Ah but which is more important the car or the driver?
Clearly if the car cannot perform it does not really matter about the driver's ability. Highlights can be entertaining full races are largely like a procession waiting to see what happens in pit stops.

Hooray, another year of watching a procession.

No refuelling this year so it will be even more dull. Moto GP for the win. There are even some charectars in moto GP who do stuff to entertain the crowd - such as the neil armstrong tribute - as well as it being real racing ( altho not as good as a couple of years ago)

Motogp has lost a lot of the excitement recently
Look at the last race of the season
How many times did the top 3 change positions from laps 3 to 30?

lol @ the F1 haters dismissing the season a month before it's even begun, lets wait for a few races before we pass judgment shall we?

STW keyboard experts in knee jerk "everyone else says it so i'll follow suit to look cool" shocker 🙄

Yawn but...

Isn't that won or lost depending how big your budget is

To some extent, yes. Just like motogp...

whether you can afford the best electronics?

Nope. Standard ECUs for a few years now.

What about drivers not having team orders

Well that was more of a Schumacher/Ferrari thing and not really much of an issue in recent seasons (Just ask Alonso and Hamilton or Button and Barrichello)

or races being decided in the pits

Fair comment to some extent but that's why they've banned refuelling this year.

what about overtaking, two or three people dicing for the lead

Well, we'll see if it happens this year but for my tastes I don't want it to be like most motogps where overtaking is generally too easy. I guess I want overtaking to be around as difficult as Vale's famous/brilliant move on Jorge last season...

Tell you what, watch Motogp, World Superbikes or British Superbikes for some real racing!!!!

I watch motogp. I still prefer F1, thanks.

So TJ, why do you think there will be less overtaking because there's no refuelling? Someone who's looked after their tryes on a heavy fuel load will be quicker than someone who's trashed them by going too fast too early so car performance will vary much more in each stint, and then the difference between heavy and light fuel will be far more so there won't be such a perfect setup - that will mean some cars will be set up to work better early in the race and some to work better later on. If you remember F1 from the days before pit stops it was far from dull.

I think to spice it up each lap should be done in the opposite direction to the last. So cross the line, do a u turn then weave back through the on coming traffic.

If you think of it like that, why bother watching, or indeed, passing comment on it...

Looks like McLaren have got themselves a quadruple diffuser - and Ferrari are throwing their toys out of the pram again!!

Yep - F1 is baffling if you don't follow it and haven't a clue what is happening.

Yep - F1 is a Constructor's competition as well as a Drivers.

Moto GP has electronic traction and launch control, anti wheelie and all that.

Moto GP typically has a bit of overtaking early doors before the race settles down.

There was loads of racing and overtaking last year, and in previous years too.
__

To make it simple though - if you don't like F1 (or, more like, are determined not to like it) then why not just not watch it and not contribute idiot comments on the subject? Do you really think that you'll chip in one of these dumb remarks and an F1 fan will suddenly have a moment of revelation?

Get Rossi in a ferrari

I thought he'd had a go in one, and wasn't actually that quick (respectable, but not as fast as the test drivers).

Rossi got close and was impressive in an F1, but there's a very long way to go for the last couple of seconds of lap time. He has already left it too late.

Much as I like bikes, the last couple of seasons of MotoGP have been pretty dull. Not that F1 is any better.

How about all the racers doing 5 laps in the car, then into the pits and change to a bike, another 5 laps... and repeat? Mixing up cars and bikes would be far more entertaining 🙂

I think thats what most F1 fans have questioned over the last 5 years.

The facts are these, in F1 there is more time difference in the cars than the drivers and the difference is not in electronics but in aerodynamics. I would venture to suggest both are not true of motogp.

Struggle to get excited about F1 and even MotoGP recently, but can't wait for this years Moto2.

A load of truly world class riders on one of three or four chassis designs, single engine supplier, few electronics. Please let there be plenty of coverage on the red button or I'm going to be forced to get sky.

What are you talking about? Last five years have been terrific. Huh?

Including

- the coming of Hamilton - fantastic, charging, super-committed and all that. Scraps toe to toe with the best driver in the world in his first season, wins the WDC the next.

- sensational Button WDC season in proper boys-own tale of team risen from the ashes against all odds.

just to mention two.

Now the best driver f all time is back, the best current driver is in a Ferrari and two British WDCs are in the same team. What more do you want?

I refer you to the earlier comment on just not understanding F1. You aren't watching a pure driver contest. So what?

F1 isn't much of a spectator sport - if it is a sport - but must be fun to do.

I won't be watching!

In actual fact I'm sure STW will have Bernie Ecclestone round shortly to ask why they allowed this forum to kill his empire...

Yeah, just wait for all the deleted postings and bannings as Mark realises what he's allowed to happen. In fact I'll start clicking "REPORT-POST" on a few messages right now just to help him along a bit.

All around my office people are vowing never to watch F1 again. They all thank STW for this enlightenment. Bernie will not be happy...

Interesting graph, starts about the time that turbo charged 1.5lt cars were introduced, which would pass (meaninglessly) all the non turbo 3.0lt cars a couple of times each lap...

Sick of the F1 one gangs getting pissed and going round fighting each other, shouting homophobic abuse and casing trouble for the innocent families who just want to go along and watch.

I imagine that as I have watched almost all Grand Prix's since I can remember, so thats probably 30 years of it & only actually turned the tv off once during a race (Senna's death) that I will be watching again this year.

I get frustrated about the court stuff & some of the obvious manipulation of rules to try to even everything up; other than that I find the general politics, the technology, the waxing & waining of talent fasinating..

2010 has the opportunity of being one of the great years bring it on I say.

I think Red Bull are more than credible - they did this last year and would have had the best car by far were it not for the DDD fiasco. I have big expectations for the new one - come on Webber!

I'm afraid my expectations for the new teams are rather more reserved! Two teams testing with no sponsors on the car does not bode well for the general climate.

I'm quite excited about it this season, to the extent that my gf has just emailed to apologise for not checking whether there was a race on when we're off on a romantic break in wales.

She's a keeper

You are allowed to sound an opinion however you have to settle on the fact that Hamo is the best thing since sliced-bread.

I'm hoping In 2010 I'll be able to empty the whole contents of a champagne bottle over the missus/wall/ceiling and dog again 😀

I like Hamilton, but I don't think he is yet the complete package. He is very much like Mansell - raw and exciting and totally committed, not to mention highly self assured! I'd like him to develop a bit more tactical skill and subtlety - the absolute benchmark for combining silly speed and a calm head is Schumacher of course.

If you want the powers that be to know what you think of F1 then spend 10 mins filling in this survey.

Don't think there's a button for 'Whenever anyone says F1 I have a Pavlovian reaction to say something about MotoGP' though.

I agree - in another couple of years he should be supreme
He's got all the ingredients, they just need mixing right
