I decided some time back to free my laptop hard-drive up and buy an external one to save my itunes library on it, seemed such a good idea at the time. But last week my ext hd decided to pack in - totally and after taking it to my local computer shop it was found to be completely knackered. But worst of all is the data on it can't be retreived so my itunes library is now gone! I have an iphone 32gb 3gs which has about 27gb of music on it so this is the only music I now have. My quandry is what can I do to sort out the problem I'm in as I've way way more music than what's on my phone in my "ghost" library on my laptop. Should I just plug my phone back into my laptop and basically re-set it all up again or is there something else I can do? If theres any I.T guys who can help it would be appreciated greatly.

Hmmm, about all you can do is retrieve what's on the phone, if the HDD's totally on the fritz. There's plenty of software out there to get it back, if it's music you've downloaded from iTunes you can get it back directly by connecting to the computer and backing up the phone. I lost nearly 80Gb of music from my laptop trying to back it up, but virtually all was on my iPod, so I could retrieve it. I would recommend spending a bit of cash on a G-Tech external from an Apple store and use it in RAID format, where it'll back up two copies on separate drives in the one case. Not cheap, around 250 squids, but more peace of mind. When I change my laptop to a Mac Mini it's what I'm going to do, along with my iPhoto library. There may be other options as well, I'm no IT expert by any means.

Unfortunately 99.9% of the music is what I've uploaded to it and there's only a small amount from itunes. It is the HDD that's gone as they did think if it hadn't gone they could replace the "caddy" It looks like I'm going just have to plug it into my laptop and retreive whats on the phone and then re-install my other stuff. Total ball ache.
