Very fed up with British Gas - despite communication with (and promises of cheques from) head office they still haven't paid me back the money they owe me since October.
Is it quite straightforward to make a claim through the small claims court?

There is a small cost, but BG will have to pay that as well (assuming that you 'win'). Most people will pay up pretty quickly once they get the court papers through.

Alternatively, you could serve them with a statutory demand:
Use form 4.1 -
Complete the relevant sections - make sure you detail why the debt is due and that it hasn't been paid - and serve it on the registered office of British Gas.
It's free, and more often than not gets a quicker response because a company doesn't want to have to deal with a winding-up petition.
