Got a bit of a blow from the rear box on my car which I want to temporarily fix. I've used Holts gun gum before which was OK but is there a better alternative?

Is it a fancy car ? Exhaust back boxes are not expensive these day. Temporary repairs ime have always been shit.

Only temporary repair i will waste my time with now is a patch from the mig.

I bought the back box for the van for 32 quid and replaced it in 20 minutes recently when it was blown.

Youll spend more than 20minutes farting round with a patch kit

use a cut open coke can as reinforcement if you're using a bandage type repair.

Its actually on a seam that will be pretty easy to get a good seal on using just goo. Car is an XC90 and amazingly you simply cannot get aftermarket exhausts!

Volvo replacement box would be £450 plus fitting and a used one will be £160.

Gun gum is rotten but I had decent results by adding an exhaust bandage in a tight wrap over the top- stopped it from cracking and falling off like it usually does.

If you know any proper garages, a messy but solid weld-up shouldn't be too much hassle to get. (the flexi on mine was done at some point by the previous owner, terrible blobs of birdshit but it wasn't new when I got the car and it's only just failed now 2 years on since I got it, so not too shabby that. Not really structural so it doesn't have to be that strong.

Would hope it would have decent thickness steel so I would see about welding. You will normally get moisture trapped around the gum stuff so they seem to rot even faster.
