I've been on them for a while, but i've just had my dosage upped a lot (From 2.5mg every 2 days to 40mg per day for 5 days, then coming down 5mg every 3 days), i'm on Prednisolone.

The last time i was on a high dosage my weight rocketed, especially around my face and neck. I've lost over a stone in the last month by increasing my running to 25-30 miles p/w (I was previously doing 10-15), and virtually cutting bread out of my diet. I'll be pretty pissed off if i have to stop running, as i know that the weight will be back on pretty quick. I know that the steroids can cause muscular atrophy, but i don't know if there is any health risk involved in continuing to train fairly hard whilst on them. Can anyone advise?

Cheers

a friend of mine was in the same boat as this only with body building. he eventually had to take some time away from gym because he got serious leg pains. but every one diferent, just try your body will let you know better than anyone on here. i would advise taking on extra protien though cos Prednisolone can cause muscle wastage. my friend got rather round in the face to...

presumably you've had/having an exacerbation of [whatever the pred is for]

I suspect that's possibly more relevant to your exercising just at the moment?

I was on a short course of 40mg for 5 days a couple of weeks ago for my Asthma. I exercised whilst taking them (OK I probably shouldn't given it was for Asthma) but I am still here.

Steroids really ****ed up my mood though and I was pretty agitated and wound up whilst on them ... even more so after hard exercise.

The Pred' is for Uveitis in my right eye, the inflammation isn't going away, hence the increase in dosage. I've had lots (And lots) of blood tests, x-rays, etc to find out the cause but to no avail so far. I've had it for nigh on 2 years now.

I think i'll probably be alright, i just hope the muscle aching doesn't get too bad. I've worked quite hard to shift the weight so far, and to put it all back on quickly would be a big downer.

As you fella I'm on Prednisolone and have been for nearly 30 years for Chrohns disease. The thing is don't let the buggers get the better of you. Docs will tell you to do weight bearing exercises because of osteoporosis. You tell them you do mountain biking and a bit of running, they say cycling is not weight bearing and running is only cardiovascular, so therefore not beneficial to you as a bone building exersize. They obliviously know **** all about off-roading and running. I am 54 and managed 40 hard miles around the North York moors a couple of weeks ago, I would like to see the experts do that!!!
PS I have been on 40 mg for a short while but have dropped to 5 at the moment. I decide what I need to take to keep me sorted, not the docs.
2.5 to 40 seems a very large variation in doseages? I would try 20 for a week then drop 5mg every week and see how it does.
Regards Steve.

Have to go on 60mg a day every now and then to break up my Cluster Headaches

Usually gives me extra energy and don't sleep as much, tend to work hard and do a fair bit of exercise, haven't noticed any problems
Most of the side effects I get are of the mental kind, feel very agitated and angry, also get a few night terrors too

Should come off them gradually, do feel a bit weird because I just stop after five days. Just be careful being in contact with anyone who is poorly especially chickenpox.

I wouldn't take advice on the dose of steroids to take from an Internet forum. Howver if you are on the steroids for uveitis then you should be able to carry on exercising if you like. Uveitis sometimes does this. Appears and hangs adobe for no fathomable reason. Bit of a bastard really but not usually a lot you can do other than try and get it to settle with some steroids and then hope it doesn't come back for a while.
