[#10185702]

This is NOT meant to be a political pro- or anti-EU thread. I just want to bring to your attention an initiative of the EU promoting European citizenship for all those currently in the EU who wish to retain it alongside their national citizenship.

As many people as possible are needed to sign up for it, so those of you on here who are interested are strongly encouraged.

Please visit this link and get yourself registered.

I, personally, am continually grateful to Guy Verhofstadt for working so tirelessly toward this possibility.

Hmmm... isn't this basically the same as those UK Parliament petitions where if it gets enough signatures they'll think about telling you why you are wrong. Then if gets some more they'll have a debate about why you are wrong.

The rules here seem to be that it needs 1,000,000 signatures and must meet the minimum threshold of signatures in at least seven EU countries.

With suitable promotion we could probably get that in the UK but getting six other countries interested would be tough.

@molgrips : the link is  http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/initiatives/ongoing/details/2018/000003 (and yes it is https://www.eucitizen2017.org//a > )

Thanks for posting this! I will spread the word

UK expats should choose  their country of residence after clicking on Molgrip’s  link. It’ll then take you to that ciountry’s registration page. Seems you have to go through your local page/process.

Excuse my ignorance (quite literally). Is this, like the only way to vote against Brexit for those that lost the referendum?

I don't know. I really hope it isn't. Verhofstadt has been talking about this possibility out of sympathy for British Remainers sincer the referendum, and it is from his Twitter feed that I got it. So hopefully that means it will carry a bit more weight than one of those Parliament petitions.

Which referendum? We've had two so far, but apparently a third would be undemocratic.

Now you're just confusing me. June '16 wasn't it.

It does sound quite similar:

It is a participatory democracy instrument that allows citizens to suggest concrete legal changes in any field where the European Commission has power to propose legislation..

Once an initiative gathers 1 million signatures with minimum thresholds reached in at least 7 countries, the European Commission must decide whether or not to take action.

What happens when a citizens' initiative gets one million signatures?

The Commission will carefully examine the initiative. Within 3 months after receiving the initiative:

- Commission representatives will meet the organisers so they can explain in detail the issues raised in their initiative
- the organisers will have the opportunity to present their initiative at a public hearing in the European Parliament
- the Commission will adopt a formal response spelling out what action it will propose in response to the citizens' initiative, if any, and the reasons for doing or not doing so.

Has anyone thought of actually pissing off to the European mainland if you feel so strongly about it.

Yep.  I've done it before, but I came back. Possibly regretting that now. I'm concerned that I'm not quite in a position to do it right now, otherwise I definitely would.  I hope we get a few years' extension, then maybe I can.

@philxx1975 - I quite like the UK in general. If people feel that they would like to stay in the UK but retain their current status as European Citizens then why is that an issue?

I'm pretty keen to not lose the right to be able to do this.

First of all, why should we leave OUR country to the Brexiteers, so that it can be turned into a right wing neo-liberal hell hole?

Secondly, if you disliked being in the EU so strongly, why didn't you piss off to America or Australia?

Actually already live on the mainland, problem is that post-Brexit I'm not sure whether I'll be able to stay here. Which would be a bit of a pain, what with house & family & cats & life etc all being here.

UK has over 19,000 signatures. No other country more than 1,000. Not surprising since the others will effectively retain the right to free movement post Brexit I guess.

many UK citizens are not dual nationals so what you effectively get is very disgruntled people trapped in a situation they cannot get out of. Or then ones that can get out are the ones the country should be desperately trying to attract in..

effectively it becomes a new class war where people actively sabotage each other and we all know how good that is for business and progress...
