As much as I don't really like the idea of blanket banning sites, X is definitely one that should be now.

Free speech should not included being able to make csam and the other effects of banning it will only be positive

When a white supremacist acts and states white nationalist values then there is only one possible response you should take if you ever find yourself standing in front of them

I think a big issue is the US treating any moves to regulate SM services by other governments as a form a foreign interference. It would have always seemed social media sites were borderless but now it seems they are actually US sovereign territory rather than simply web services that happen to have their corporate office in the US.

Stick a ****ing flag in it then - mandate Stars and Stripes on every internet platform and service just so we know where we are.

It's all very confusing on X at the moment.

When you point out that free speech and enabling pedo porn are likely not actually the same thing it appears they are but they also aren't. It's a standing oedo particle.

It's stunning to also see the mental gymnastics being deployed, particularly by English Patriots urging Trump to invade, well, Engerland, the land they profess to love.

All very odd.

I am somewhat confused by all the stuff going on at Twitter, if I owned a social media tool that people were using to create reet dodgy images, I would disable it until such a time that it worked so people were unable to create such images.

But we are in a place where Musk doesn't seem to want to do that.

He doesn't want to be told what to do, and he doesn't want to restrict what people can do with the tools he controls. At all. He is not going to voluntarily do anything he isn't forced into by the threat of regulations backed by the power to switch his services off.

Gotta say, @somafunk nails it really. Musk is the least confusing/difficult person to understand. His motivation(s) are at least completely transparent.

I'm clearly being a bit to simple, but why can't (or won't) the government just block all access to Twitter?

It seems very obvious...freedom of speech is absolutely fine but it comes with consequences (as has been stated many times on this site).

I'm unsure why this hasn't been swiftly resolved by a blanket ban.

A ban as a result of legal proceedings, or a ruling from the regulator... that's one thing... an arbitrary instruction to block the platform taken directly by a minister? That's another.

Think of it this way... what if Musk supports and helps to get a future government elected... and their minister starting blocking access to competing platforms but not his... with no ruling by or recourse to the regulating body or the courts.

The government, and parliament, need to set the laws and empower the regulator and courts to act.

Ah ok...I've clearly not being paying much attention as I thought it had been discussed and was a case of when it was happening...if it hasn't been determined then that kind of explains why it is still accessible.

Because trump would hit the uk with punitive tarrifs/trade deals.

I see that GB News are doing just as tou world expect. A female presenter (definitely not news anchor as that would invite scrutiny...) laughed off the though of herself being AI'ed into wearing a bikini.

That gave me me my almost daily wft moment. If she's ok with that, fine, I suppose... but how about if her children or nieces/nephews are AI'ed into masked sexual poses? Is it still just a big of a chuckle then?

Would she just laugh that off becauce a bit of paedophilia is just "free speech"  after all? I can't but help think she understandably would be instructing her solicitors within minutes when this type of "free speech"  is aimed at her family... but the rest of us?

Well, our families obviously don't matter and it's all just a bit of a giggle.

"It's okay if bad things happen to other people, just as long as it's not me."

I think that's the top and bottom of the mentality we are dealing with.

I'm still a little shocked that they're isn't more world push back (yet) about Musk monetising AI paedophilia pics but there seems to be some momentum growing.

It's only a state, not an, erm State... But it's the 4th biggest economy in the world from memory and the home to silicon valley of course, so it's still significant.

Just saw this on the link, I mean, what? Does he really believe that in his own head? 😬

On Wednesday, Musk posted to X that he is "not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero."

They're basically saying crack on - we'll put minimum protection in place to stop people accessing it.

But also protect women & girls.

Absolute scum.

Someone was saying on the internets that Grok will still generate the images, the geoblock just stops people seeing them. This isn't good enough.

And this is because it is far cheaper for Musk (for it _is_ he that decides this) to put a geoblock in than it would be for X to re-write Grok with proper guardrails that actually prevented this.

It is literally the least amount of effort and cost that can be put out to stop the UK, California and any other nation with laws against CSAM or nudifying fining his product.

I honestly hope that someone has the stones to fine him a percentage of X's turnover for this, with other countries doing the same thing. Twitter might have helped the Arab Spring in the past, but now it is just a mouthpiece for racists, trolls and disinformation.

I wonder if X engineers can even identify and delete the specific bits of code to prevent it from creating these sorts of images.

Nope because it doesnt exist in terms of code. As Willard says its about writing guardrails in the prompts to try and block stuff being returned.

Well that or create a data training set which excludes any images which can then be used as the basis for it. Which would be difficult and restrictive eg no women in bikinis (not even princess Leia) and so on.

You guys are over thinking it. He's a stubborn guy with all the money, he won't do shit unless it's stunningly obviously will destroy his business empire. As he's mostly got the ear of the US admin, and the US admin are trying to force the EU etc not to censor X he will not have trouble maintaining his stubborn stance. Also, he thinks 4chan is funny so it's just

Now apparently worth £850bn. How is such possible? Guess much of it is just hype, and he could never realise it if he sold much stock, but by heck that's a lot of dosh for one person to have. Obv paid well to fund the Orange Clown a few sheckles and hang with him for a spell.

I thought Musk's name popping to the top of the forum would have been because X's French headquarters were raided by Paris Cyber Crime unit today... who posted about it on X and then in the same tweet added that they would now stop posting on X

Seemilngly their initial investigation which started this time last year into fraudulent data extraction has been widened to include possession and organised distribution of child porn as well as denial of crimes against humanity.

Channel4News used footage they got Grok to generate when reporting on the merger. To say I think less of ITN now is putting it mildly.

There was something on the news last week about the French government pivoting away from US technology companies, after the Greenland debacle and also Trump mummering about using technology as weapon against europe, Macron went good point we will dump US technology companies  from government infrastructure. Hopefully other European governments will follow.

I think I read somewhere the Europe are developing an alternative to VISA/AMEX payment systems...sounds like a good idea to me.

I think the european payment system will be more an ECB "paypal" type app, or an electronic wallet that you top up from your bank account to use for payment. So not a direct replacement for the current system, it didn't sound that great when I heard it described, but it might be better once released in practice.

I think the idea is to stop mastercard/visa taking a cut from retailers more than a consumer friendly alternative. There is no reason it can't be both but I think so far they haven't given enough thought to the latter IMO.

It is hard to believe that some of these people really believe some of the things they say. Or hard to understand how they can perform the mental gymnastics required.

I honestly don't understand how Karoline Leavitt, for example, is able to stand in front of the media with a straight face.

Remember when the press secretaries would quit after a while?

Her staying power has been remarkable, although she does now seem to be increasingly following her boss down the "you're just a terrible journalist" route when she can't be bothered thinking up an answer
