Does anybody have any feedback on an elliptical or cross trainer for home use?

Are they any good and any recommendations on what I should look for in buying one?

I am looking to increase my cardio fitness to help with a few longer distance cycling events I have planned for the summer. Running is out of the question due to bad knees, not keen on gym because I live in a rural area and don't really want to travel 20 mins to and from a gym.

At the moment I am just trying to cycle as much as possible but battling to get more than 2 short rides and 1 long ride per week in.

Or should I just buy a turbo? The wife would use a cross trainer but not a turbo

Cross trainers are great for dodgy knees. We've got one (a York one that was about £400 new), and it's really solid. It's also MASSIVE and very, very heavy, so it all depends if you want to be able to move it out of the way quickly. You can get the smaller/lighter/cheaper ones, but they're a bit wobbly in my experience.

I got one years ago from Decathlon and its very good. As above it is big and you need space around it.
For cardio work they are good but I find as someone with good cardio fitness, I have to be on it for a long time at quite a high level to get much benefit which is soul destroying.

I bought one a few years ago, a bremshey. It's very good and a great work out. I lent it to my father in law but he doesn't use it so I'm selling it. Has various programmes, displays heart rate if you have a polar chest strap.

Cost £500 new, very good condition and I'm selling for £200.

It's not unstable and it won't fill a garage!

It's in wetherby at the moment. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks for the feedback. I may have to rethink it as you have confirmed what I thought - big enough to be any good will take up most of my garage and small enough will be unstable.

I may just get a turbo and crack on.

Thanks again.

You mentioned your wife in the first post - another option would be a spinning bike, more adjustable so both of you could use it easily, and better for cycling fitness than an elliptical trainer.

Thanks mogrim, a good idea, I will have a look

You are right that I mentioned my wife and she says she will use it but in all honesty, I will believe it when I see it 😉

Sounds like the static bike my wife bought, still it's quite handy for drying sheets and the like 🙂

(Incidentally, this is why I suggested a spinning bike rather than a static bike: you can still use them to train on... they're also a lot quieter than a turbo).
