Anyone purchased it yet ? I've hovered over the purchase button....but I'm still BBC Elite version era.
"early access to the combat training demo" will it be worth for £35
https://www.elitedangerous.com/
need a new PC (or at least GFX + Windoze OS) first.
that will make more sense after the boxing day sales.
then I'm getting it
Ohh I got hold of a Rift at the weekend, really need to give this a go...
bit the bullet. It'll probably be a disappointment...
It's looking very good by all accounts.
I didn't get it cos my big daft flight stick thing is too old for W7 x64, and £35 is a bit rich for me.
Awesome, I read an article a while back that said the combination of the two was really rather excellent. I think the Rift will be the thing to finally tear me away from mobile gaming! What version have you got, DK2?Ohh I got hold of a Rift at the weekend, really need to give this a go...
...haen't had time to play it yet. Probably wait until christmas
What version have you got, DK2?
Just a DK1, but beggars can't be choosers.
Despite the low res the experience can be astonishing though. Definitely developer rather than consumer kit mind.
I signed up for the Beta/Gamma testing back in August and have been dabbling with it ever since. So far so good, everything seemed to be working perfectly...
..until they released Gamma version 2.0 a couple of weeks back when I started encountering random game freezes. Since then, ED has been unplayable despite the release of four subsequent Gammas.
I've raised a couple of tickets and am waiting...

Patience of a saint 😉
Downloaded the update last night and logged in. Within five seconds of viewing the galactic map, the game froze on me again.
It looks absolutely stunning, but I think I'll leave it until the bugs are fixed.
beta was 50 notes wasn't it?
that's mental, they charged for the beta and they charged more than the normal game. crazy
Alpha was over £100 too.
Makes sense really. It Filters out people who are interested in testing an improving the game rather than anybody picking up the game and moaning about missing features that they would like to see (which is what it turned into towards the end of the Beta)
so is it posh flight stick only or will you be able to play (reasonably) with mouse and keyboard?
I might wait until about 2.3Elite: Dangerous 1.0 is available for purchase and download
<googles minimum specs>
and a pc upgrade
I'm curious as-to what machines people are running this on and what spec/settings.
In theory I could probably manage it on my QX6850 but it would be stretching it. It doesn't say anything about multi threading so i'd guess a decently specced i5 would do the job capably.
Graphics requirements are pretty heavy going, didn't get my 4850 THAT long ago 🙁
Just seen they have a quad core as a minimum, surprising. My machine's only a dual core. I exceed the spec on all other points though. Most stuff it's the GPU and RAM that matter, be surprised if it was different.
i5 ought to be fine.
needs a pretty hefty GPU though. I was going to get an Nvidia 750 or 760, which are about the useable minimum, but may get a 770. 900 series are a rip off.
need to buy my first windows licence since erm XP. Crazy that it's going to cost me 3x the price of the game just to provide a means to load the game.
hmmm shame about the high spec requirements, one of the things about the original bbc stuff was that it could run with hardly anything,
i'm playing oolite at the moment, and it runs a dream on my low spec lappy!
Cheers guys, I was after some real-world feedback though.
I suspect I'll be OK, but I was curious for some feedback from people already using the Beta
I have Xeon 6Core at 4.2GHz, 7970 at 1200MHz and 12 GB RAM. I guess the Weak link is the 7970.
The 970 is quite a cool card, I don't see the rip off! My friend's one gets around 10,000 On Firestrike, whereas the 7970 just gets 8,000 in that system.
The game looks awesomes, can't wait 😀
My PC is a two-year old i5 (3570K I believe) overclocked a tad and with 8gb of RAM but my graphics card is an Nvidia 780 which is plenty beefy. Hardware-wise it runs Elite Dangerous without any issue at all...until ED decides it's had enough and crashes again.
Saw this on The Gadget Show and the graphics did look very good!
What Graphics card does it need? Want to give it a go on the Laptop as the PC has too much dust on it these days.
It depends on the level of detail, but according to Frontier it'll run on a DX10 card with 1Gb of graphics memory (ie an Nvidia 260+)
Hmmmm... this is the first PC game in years which has me wanting a go. Possibly not enough to buy a new computer for it but there again, I do need a new laptop...
Im waiting for the reviews and feedback from someone how didnt invest £60 odd into the early access stuff,
am very curious, tho.
my mate runs it on a POS....just wind down the eye candy and it'll be fine
Any recommendations for a good PC buy that'll play this game?
Realised I actually have a 7850 and the 48 snuffed it months back. Oh well, looks like I'll be having a peek. Now the only question is do I get GTAV to tide me over till problems get sorted and have another shot at Tachyon for nostalgias sake or do I tough it out and hope they have better devs than SOE?
ED has to had one of the smoothest MMO launches yet. I've been in since bets. Hardware specs 760 GTX 8Gig Ram runs in ultra. I also have it on 1TB SSD which makes it really smooth. SSD is a great bang for your buck as the game essential resides like all MMOs on your HD.
Check out scan or overclockers for PCs
Brought it the day before release came in £5 cheaper plus they threw in an Eagle ship for free.
Not had any crashes yet playing on Core™ i7-4790K with 16GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2GB (early Christmas present to myself), graphics set to ultra by auto detect not had any crashes yet.
So far I've been doing a little trading in my loaner ship and picking up the odd delivery job. Once I've racked up enough creds I'll buy a Cobra and probably turn pirate. Not had any combat yet apart from training missions and not been hijacked yet.
Loving it great game playing in open world not had much interaction with other players yet bar watching them piss off station security. Elite Frontier was a favourite game this takes it further pretty much the game I wanted.
Oh and get a joystick I'm replacing my older one with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Joystick-PS3/dp/B001CXYMFS
That's cool.
This is the Uber Joystick

It's one-time purchase, right? I think I'll buy it after I've finished the work I have got on.
I think I technically meet the system requirements, with my ancient q6600 quadcore but I don't really think that's what they mean from the description.
Does seem to be an unstable mess so far though, anecdotally- nobody I know can get it to run acceptably except for the guy who was in the alpha
(Usually at this point I'd be sarcastic about day one buyers being paying beta testers but that particular shark has been jumped in style...)
Yeah one-time though I expect there maybe paid for expansions in the future.
Playing as Cletus_Van_Damme btw should I meet any STWers in the vastness of space.
(Usually at this point I'd be sarcastic about day one buyers being paying beta testers but that particular shark has been jumped in style...)
I paid extra to be a beta tester, am quite happy to do so given that I spent many months (and years) playing Elite on the Speccy and Frontier on the Amiga which may or may not have been legitimate copies (ahem). I'm fully aware that there may be bugs that need to be ironed out, but for my setup ED has been completely bug free right up until the gamma releases at the end of November!
I suspect that this will be remedied soon.
Personally, I can't wait to be able to land on planets. Even Frontier had a ridiculous level of detail (the clocks on cities' church towers showed identical times to your ship's own time), I fully expect to be wowed when this is incorporated as promised by Frontier Developments.
Am I the only one that thought the original elite was fairly tedious despite being a masterpiece from a tech point of view?
Frontier was just as bad,i dont hold our much hope for this new version being any better.
Am I the only one that thought the original elite was fairly tedious despite being a masterpiece from a tech point of view?
I suppose it depends on your point of view - I loved Elite because there were a great many ways to approach the game, plus of course you had lots of places to explore. Frontier was more of a mixed bag for me, although there was an awful lot to see and do, some of the bugs got on my nerves, not to mention the combat which degraded into jousting with lasers very quickly.
I'm a huge fan of open world games where you get to explore places. I'd far rather immerse myself in that than play an FPS for example.

Northwind - load of rubbish its been running smoothly since release Ive been playing it for hours. Given your system specs I think it maybe your system thats the problem.
had bout 25 mins going through the tutorials on Monday night (was out til early hours last night) so looking forward to more time tonight and to actually get in the ship and out into the universe!
So far through the limited time I had with it I preferred using a 360 pad for the flying (once I'd remapped)
I played it a fair bit as there really was nothing else like it but I didn't sink hundreds of hours into it like some did. It was definitely a masterpiece of imagination/programming but yeah it was pretty tedious... long periods of very little happening.Am I the only one that thought the original elite was fairly tedious despite being a masterpiece from a tech point of view?
It's virtually unplayable now (except very brief blasts for nostalgia purposes) although that's no different really to the vast majority of computer games from that time period. For a game to stand the test of time it needs to have been skilfully designed as well as implemented which wasn't really understood in the days of "bedroom" coding.
Hopefully with ED they won't have forgotten to include a fun, solid game alongside the technical tour-de-force!

I don't think it's my system causing the problems on my mates' machines tbh, that'd imply some really weird coding errors, especially since I don't own the game.
I used to love playing Elite & Frontier, these days however I don't know what this
Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
4 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
means so I should probably just go back to reading a book before bed.
A decent gaming system isn't massively expensive, if you go to somewhere like Scan for a 3xs system then it's not much more than a PC from one of the high street retailers. As with mountain bikes, there's a law of diminishing returns. You can spend a few grand on a system with tons of RAM, an i7 processor and a couple of graphics cards daisy-chained together but equally an i5 system with a mid spec card and 8gb of RAM will be just fine.
I bought an Nvidia 780 card for less than £300 back in September just after the 9xx cards were announced...
So Northwind you don't own the game and can't play it on your mates machine so you conclude its an' stable mess'? Maybe better to have some experience of it before posting.
The website for this says there is a mac version to follow. If it does arrive for mainly sentimental reasons it might just get me to buy/play a computer game for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Pawsy_Bear - MemberMaybe better to have some experience of it before posting.
Yeah, see, that's kind of the problem- none of them can get much experience of playing it, just of it breaking.
Conversly, I've been in since the first days of the beta and apart from some problems with a particular Gamma patch (2.02 I think) which broke the game for most everyone for about 6 hours I haven't had a single issue with it crashing. It's been a buttery smooth launch and I'm having great fun playing it.
Core i7-4790K @4Ghz, 16GB, nVidia 970 for comparison so I'm comfortably over the ideal spec, still, it looks awesome and plays very well to my mind. The way that Frontier are putting in the work I'm expecting this game to get better and better..
I sounds really negative don't I... I should say, I'm almost certainly going to get it, I'm just waiting for a few patches down the line. (and it does sound like some of the multiplayer/instancing and social stuff is a bit lacking, for an online game?)
As launches go, it beats that Eve expansion that deleted my boot.ini 😆
I was just reading this and realised that it's a (real world) friend of mine at the centre of it. What an ace way to play the game!
http://kotaku.com/one-thousand-gamers-embark-to-explore-the-entire-galaxy-1677603818
I'm really interested by im quite .... scared... of the time commitment required - is this a game where I can get progression and see the whole game with a "reasonable" time commitment for the standard adult?
Or is it a bit like EVE, where you need to quit your job and dump your partner to even become OK-ish.
you can play as much or little as you want. Games still running buttery smooth for me too. Remember though its a sandbox bit like Eve only here there is no safe space you can be killed everywhere 😈time commitment required
There's no real progression just ship upgrades and new ships just enjoy the journey rather than "grinding" to the next ship and you'll enjoy it more. Given the size of the sandbox there's plenty of systems where you won't see other people just NPCs though if you want PvP keep an eye on the Galnet news for updates of where to find conflict zones.
I've just been enjoying exploring, looking out of the windows sometimes can be spectacular, have to get good at avoiding intercepts or fighting with exploring thou.
I got into the Beta too.
I have to say, the game was for Beta, superbly smooth on my system too. Don't know what Northwinds pc is like, but on one of the other forums I stalk, it was much the same, several people found it ran remarkably smoothly, and one found it stuttery and unplayable.
Does tend to suggest its down to the pc and not the game.
