missus is using her treadmill and watching the tv both which run of the same ring main but not the same socket. every so often the treadmill suddenly stops mid run and the tv loses it's picture and goes to a blue screen but doesn't actually turn off. all other appliances off the same supply carry on fine . No fuse blows or trip needs to be reset. it's only just started doing this but the missus says the tv has done this before on it's own .
can anyone suggest what is causing this and how to fix?

I would start by checking the sockets in the room where the TV and treadmill reside. Nip up the screws and look for evidence of a loose wire.

Actually, I would start by turning off the power to the ring main.

Could it be possible there's a thermal link in the treadmill motor causing it to cut out if it overheats? Could be causing a volt drop to the tv when it does cut out.

Sounds like low volts. The question is, is the whole house or street suffering or is it just that ring? It might be that these are two appliances that are noticeably affected.

You could ask the distribution network opperator to check your supply. Low volts for you could be a developing neutral fault in which case, you're getting low volts because someone else is getting high volts.

That's enough for them to want to get someone out today. If they're happy it's not that, they might install a voltage recorder to see if it's a problem on their side or yours.

Call 105 and tell them you've experienced intermittent low volts.

seems like it is the treadmill as she's just been running without the tv on and it did the same again. if it is an overheating cutout then seems strange that it will start again immediately and run for a while before cutting out once again .you'd think that if overheating it wouldn't start again for a while no?

Not necessarily. The overheating component could cool down very quickly once stopped.

I'd be trying the treadmill on a different ring (just to rule that out) but it does sound like a faulty treadmill.

The TV does it without the treadmill.

The first thing I'd do is run an extension lead to the television from another ring main.If the fault stops you know it's a fault on the ring main, poor continuity, loose connection?

thanks all ..particularly OnzaDog . I haven't tried the treadmill again as feeling lazy but did as OD suggested and rang the local DNO who confirmed there have been 2 network switches in the area today around that time which may well have caused the cutoffs. It's all a bit above my head but hopefully all will be well now. why some things were affected in the house and not others is beyond me I guess it's all down to sensitivity of electronic circuits .
