Car came with a charging cable, and a separate 3-pin cable & charger - which is great and all, but I have a wallbox with cable at home, and public chargers that I've seen always have the cable integrated - I'm in a PHEV anyhow, so not all that likely to charge at a public charger - I can't think of a scenario where I'd actually need the cables?
Do people bother carrying them around? I have lots of bike bits and gear that I'd prefer to store.
I do but have never used them, they live in the frunk on mine so it's not space I need for anything else - would probably leave them in the garage if they took up useful space.
There's a free charger at one of my work sites that has untethered chargers, so I keep a Type 2 cable in the underfloor box. I wouldn't bother for a PHEV
TBH, i charge more often in a PHEV (daily at least) than i do in a BEV (when the battery gets flat).
I even have two cables, one for a "standard" wall box and a second that will handle domestic sockets or 3 phase. The wall box one lives in the back of the car and gets used regularly (most of our work chargers are tethered, most others aren't). The 3 phase/domestic socket cable lives in the garage and only comes in the car if i'm going somewhere with the option (and need) to charge.
I carry my cable on longer journeys. Doesn't take up much room and I'd rather have it than wish I'd bought it with me if it was my only option. I last used it at a supermarket charger in Thurso 9 months ago.
Carry all the time so I can extract sweet, sweet freebie electrons from my employer (via untethered chargers).
Most cars have a place under the boot floor to store them out of the way don't they?
I carry mine (full EV) but very rarely use it, it’s like a spare wheel that you may never need but very handy the rare occasion you need it. Rule of thumb, fast chargers are tethered, slower A/C chargers are untethered. Usually I only need to use public charging on long journeys so I use fast chargers but once or twice a might plug in my cable at a supermarket etc slow charger when away from home. I have occasionally found some places give you free parking if charging so I use my cable then as I might as well pay for the charge rather than the parking.
I don't routinely carry the cables in my BEV. I'd chuck them in if I thought there was a chance they'd come in handy but probably 95% of my mileage is home charging, most of the rest I'd plan to use tethered rapid chargers on long trips and it's only things like spending a week away where they'd get carried.
Thanks all, I've never come across an untethered charger, so i guess they do exist.... I have under boot space but it's much more usefully filled with a bike pump and tools than a bulky cable I'll rarely use
I've carried them around. Plenty of 'underboot' space so it can go in the car and not be noticed.
In 7 years and across 3 cars I've used a 'granny' adapter a couple of times because I could and once to test if the problem of a charging fault was the cable or the car (it was the car - fixed the following day by a mobile service appointment). I've used a Type 2 cable supplied with a car once just to get some free electricity at a Tesco in Colchester. The amount we got while we shopped was not worth the trouble of opening the plastic bag it came in.
I always carry the 3-pin charger and the 3-phase type 2 cable.
Never carry the 3 pin charger but keep a type 2 in the storage compartment under the boot. Most 11kw chargers are untethered and I’ve needed it a few times. Very useful at Comrie Croft as they used to give you free charging but I think that’s changed now.
