Any ebay experts in?

I sold a campag veloce chainset last week. My listing states no returns accepted.

The buyer has now requested a return claiming "it doesn't fit"

Do I have to accept the return?

If he has tried fitting it and marked it (it was brand new) do I accept the return and have the option of a partial refund?

Hi,

As a personal seller, coupled with the fact you have stated no returns. You do not have to accept it.
Has he just asked in a message, or gone through the 'proper' return process?

Get the buyer to send good quality pics to prove it hasn't been marked first up. They might be trying to return it because they've over-spent and need a quick and easy refund on something they bought in haste. It happens a lot at this time of year.

I don't know if you, as a private/individual seller, have to accept the return though, the Consumer Contract Regs that replaced the Distance Selling Regs aren't clear, or at least I couldn't find anything in there.

He is using proper returns process.

Not as described is tricky as the description is brief. ie.

"Campag veloce compact 50/24 chainset."

No mention of fitting/standards etc.

As a private seller, stating "no returns" as per eBay t&C's, you don't have to accept a return.

Don't be bullied, persuaded or otherwise into covering someone else's buyer's remorse.

(it was brand new)

this could have a little influence on matters and the expectations the buyer has (regardless of what their rights actually are). Did you list it as 'New'?.

I buyer can't really tell whether you're Chainreaction or Joe Blogs on eBay so they don't know if they're buying from a retailer with full warrantee support and returns services or a private seller clearing out his garage.

But for the purpose of an ebay listing 'New' comes with the expectations of the former. It doesn't mean secondhand but unused - thats 'Used' even if its never been taken out of its packet because not of the guarantees of 'New' are applicable.

^ could be a point unless you mention you bought it and is too late to return to store etc in the listing.
I normally go with New (Other) in that case.

However, in this case I wouldn't accept the return

This all the way. The only thing I'd be curious about is why it doesn't "fit" ?

Indeed - just suggest he does what you did when you bought something you don't want /need- stick it on eBay -it'll be worth exactly what they bought it for, they might get lucky and sell it for more.

I would have listed as New Other but as you stated no returns then No returns it is. If the item was faulty then you would need to accept it but you don't need to just because it doesn't fit. That is the buyers fault for buying the wrong item.

I buyer can't really tell whether you're Chainreaction or Joe Blogs on eBay so they don't know if they're buying from a retailer with full warrantee support and returns services or a private seller clearing out his garage.

A business seller has to disclose the fact they are a business, on their ad, so you can usually tell if the seller is CRC or a private seller. Looking at their other items usually gives the game away too.

If something is brand new/unfitted and boxed, I would also list it as brand new.

New/other, I would use for items without packaging or things taken straight off of a new bike.

I also wouldn't want to accept a return. Shirley, the buyer can sell it on for the same price he paid for it from the OP?

If it doesnt fit because of something lacking in your description it is likely that either via paypal or ebay he will be able to force the return due to not as described. They rarely (ever??) find in favour of a seller. I just accept returns as its generally less hassle.

If the buyer has paid with PayPal all you are doing is delaying him.
PayPal always side with the the buyer ,even when eBay take your side.
Other bad news is that PayPal will use Hermes and will probably take a month to send it back.
I'd talk to buyer and get them to pay return postage costs and hope you get your original item back damage free and not the 5 yr old one that he's replaced.

Your listing is vague !

Well there isn't any unnecessary waffle, but contains all the information you might need to buy a Veloce chainset.
Only thing wrong your photos don't show the l/h crank, there was one wasn't there 😯

Except information about what BB standard it's for. The main thing that makes a crank fit a bit these days.

Have you asked why it doesn't fit?

I had someone try to return a saddle that "didn't fit" this year, they went quiet when I explained that 99% of saddles had the same fitment.

Well its a power torque chainset so you'll need power torque cups. If the buyer doesn't know this he should have asked.
In fact their all that needs to make it fit any frame and are cheap enough.

Your listing is vague !

It states what the crank set is. If you need to know more, i.e. what BB is required then you need to ask the question before buying (even though that is easy to find via Google)

I would never have bought this item myself without a question or two, doesn't even say what length the arms are.

Auction says enough plus there is pictures. Buyer obviously doesn't know enough about campagnolo components. As previously mentioned I would like to know how it doesn't fit, they might just need different BB cups.

I would just take it back, you will get into the whole what BB standard it was for debate ie powertorque vs ultratorque via paypal and he will win anyway.

Incomplete you mean.
Missing out the bottom bracket standard is just slightly sloppy. But you haven't even stated the size.

There is blame on all sides here.

But buyer should suck it up and learn to think before they bid.
