'won' a chainring in an auction.
it turned up and it's not the (compact) size it was listed as. so i've done the return thing and received all the money back. but i still have to pay to post it. so i'm going to be out of pocket.
is this right?

although they wont mention it you can get the seller to refund the postage as well. You ask the seller to do when you raise a dispute as it wasnt as described.
Make sure there is a tracking number on the return as that is needed to show it has been sent in the dispute

You can ask the seller for a returns label. They fill in the details and pay the return postage.
