So I’ve just sold a dropper post on eBay but it’s now meant to be paying funds direct to bank account rather than using PayPal.
So eBay says I’ve been paid but I don’t have funds in account yet - if I send the item and the funds don’t arrive that’s a potential risk. You’d think they’d use faster payment so near real time - but from their timescales I wonder if you have to wait for a 3 working day BACS payment. If so that’s a step backwards for me - even if it works out marginally cheaper than accepting a PayPal payment.
Has anyone sold anything / can comment on when they got funds?
I read it would be phased in gradually ie not yet
Meanwhile, is that a new account? (yours)
If so you might need 25 feedback or £x00 sales before they trust you with normal paypal procedures
Well I made an eBay purchase on Friday with PayPal so I reckon you might have set up the auction wrong.
Everything I've sold recently has been with PayPal. Money was in my PayPal account straight away. Last thing was a couple of days ago.
I’ve been using eBay for years - loads and loads of feedbacks - several hundred. I’d updated account details as prompted by the app - I guess that’s turned off PayPal for my incoming payments. No idea how the buyer has paid.
No idea how the buyer has paid.
Have you messaged them to ask?
Sold something on ebay last week and was paid almost straight away by buyer. Once notification had come through money was showing in PP account
I’ve had the email saying I’ll get paid by eBay now and not PP. not entirely sure how it’s all supposed to work as so many people have and are comfortable with using PP

You've signed up to let ebay manage your payments (which everybody will have to do eventually)

This is what I’ve had. The app says I’ve been paid - found another tab that suggests I should get payment tomorrow - will see if that happens before sending anything!
You can schedule payouts at a frequency you choose (daily, as funds are available, or weekly). Regardless of how the buyer pays, payouts are consistently initiated Monday through Friday, within 2 business days of order confirmation.
I won some Pace RC35 forks tonight and paid via PayPal. Had to log in though so not as integrated as usual.
Has ebay changed its Terms of Use? I noticed quite a lot of sellers are refusing paypal and requiring cash on collection. That used to be a violation seems like they don't remove the listing now though.
As far as I know you've always been able to ask for cash on collection but you always had to offer PayPal. I remember even before that there were loads of ways to pay; Postal Order, Escrow, Nochex etc. Glory days of deactivated munitions and training land mines before it became another outlet.
What are ebay charging for this service?
I sold something 2 hrs ago and the guy paid straight away via PP.
Moving forward I’d like to know if buyer / seller protection changes if PP gets knocked in the head.
All sellers will be on eBay managed payments by end of January, PayPal will still be an option but not default. For buyers PayPal will still be an option but the likes of Apple pay and Google pay will be offered and a direct eBay card checkout.
For sellers it looks like marginally reduced fees but initially a delay on "cashing out"
As a business using eBay I see it as a possible gain long term, but from chatting to other shops and traders the shirt term is slow and glitchy.
As far as I know you’ve always been able to ask for cash on collection but you always had to offer PayPal. I
That was my understanding. I think you also couldn't offer a discount for cash on collection.
Seen a few listings recently that said any paypal payments would be refused/refunded.
So I guess now that ebay doesn't directly control and benefit from paypal, they aren't as worried about it.
Seen a few listings recently that said any paypal payments would be refused/refunded.
PayPal still take a small cut when payments are refunded 😒
like many I guess I have a bank account I've linked to paypal and around 99% of its use is to fund ebay buys...I noticed the other day a seller said preferred direct transfer ...always considered having paypal access bank funds not as secure as I would like...might as well delist the link if no use in future quite liked the ease of a quick click at checkout
All sellers will be on eBay managed payments by end of January, PayPal will still be an option but not default
Exactly. And as I like Paypal I will be offering only PayPal on items I sell just as I always have. If people don't want to use PayPal then they won't be buying my items.
Didn't ebay invent PayPal and then sold it off for millions?
Now ebay don't like paying for the PayPal service they are introducing this?
Or is it set up to reduce fraud by delaying payments to allow more time for fraud checks to be carried out?
I like PayPal, it's my preferred choice for paying for anything on line. I hate setting up accounts and passwords with companies I will never use again.
I like the security of PayPal. Ebay will need to convince me to change.
I sold a watch over the weekend through eBay and was paid straight away by PP.
£23 in fees had been auto-deducted from the buyer's payment.
Is this normal?
£23 in fees had been auto-deducted from the buyer’s payment.
PP take a cut directly, so you always get less than the selling price, then Ebay bill you their cut at the end of the month...
I like the security of PayPal. Ebay will need to convince me to change.
Yep, having banking info in one place (which is fairly secure PayPal) is much better than giving out banking info to all the sites I buy from however eBay don't need to convince you of anything, just continue to use PayPal as I will be doing.
@kerley i dont think you'll have the option to accept paypal on ebay sales,
a buyer will be able to pay by paypal but you wont get a paypal receipt, these funds will go into Ebay managed payments, hence monies will then transfer to your bank account..
i see this as ebay pushing to get rid of those personal sellers who are acting as a business,
they claim fees will be lower, but businesses dont get £1 FVF sales.
Having regular adhoc funds into a bank account could cause issues with banks for those selling frequently. either they want you to upgrade to a business bank account, or they withdraw your personal bank account.

Yeah I got some weird email from ebay suggesting I should be vat registered, perhaps after selling off my dad's stuff over the past couple of years I guess? Only ever really use their £1 fvf these days.
Didn’t ebay invent PayPal and then sold it off for millions?
No, ebay bought Paypal off Xcom (Elon Musk company) for $1.5bn in 2002. That in turn had been acquired in 2000 as part of a security company. It was split into a seperate company in 2015.

How so? Never heard of this in my puff.
@dickyboy what were you selling, to be VAT registered you'd have to be selling towards £85k a year.
@squirrelking a friend of a friend had a 60 day notice on his bank account as he was transfering circa 500 to a grand a month from paypal about 6-7 years ago, all ebay sales.
HSBC rang him asked him his online selling details, he said he was selling personal items, they disagreed. :0)
@whatyadoinsucka mostly books, medals & kilts but less than £5k in total. I've deleted the email, will have to see if it's in my trash folder. The more valuable items I sold direct to dealers as I'm pretty risk adverse.

PayPal is PayPal, if someone pays via PayPal it will go through standard process.
"First, PayPal is not going away on eBay. It will still be one of many other payment options available on the site even after the changes are in place. In fact, many buyers might still prefer to use PayPal as it has emerged to be a very important payment method in ecommerce, right alongside Visa and MasterCard."
"eBay users will continue to have the option of using PayPal until 2023, but it will effectively be relegated to “second-class status”."
@dickyboy strange email then, ignore as a fake :0)
@ Kerley, thats not what I've read, buyers still have the option of paypal, no mention that sellers can still receive paypal. a buyer payment via paypal will go into Ebay managed payments, not your paypal account
I'm not very clued up on the ins and outs of ebay/paypal, but I thought paypal offered an extra layer of protection (as a buyer)?
Ebay give you 30 days to raise a complaint, whereas with Paypal, it's 6 months? Then if you do raise a dispute via ebay, and they knock it back, you can then try paypal? Is that right? They (paypal) also offer free returns on some items as wel? If so, it'd seem to make sense to continue to use it (as a a buyer).
@ Kerley, thats not what I’ve read, buyers still have the option of paypal, no mention that sellers can still receive paypal. a buyer payment via paypal will go into Ebay managed payments, not your paypal account
If you pay via PayPal (a third party) the transaction will be with PayPal and will not be going into any other payment system. Where did you read it, do you have a link?
a buyer paying paypal will see no difference, but the money will go into ebay managed payments, rather than the sellers paypal account, the info below is what i have read.
no change to a buyer, only difference for sellers
https://sellercentre.ebay.co.uk/selling/managed-paymentsBenefits for sellers
Choice: Buyers have more payment options (credit and debit; Apple Pay; Google Pay; PayPal and PayPal Credit). No separate PayPal account required - for buyers or sellers
What does it mean when eBay manages payments?
When eBay manages payments, you can sell and get paid in one place, on eBay, and buyers have more ways to pay. You can schedule payouts at a frequency you choose (daily, as funds are available, or weekly). Regardless of how the buyer pays, payouts are consistently initiated Monday through Friday, within 2 business days of order confirmation.
Instead of managing relationships with both eBay and PayPal, you can access everything you need on eBay: consolidated fees, customised reports, refunds and returns, labels, and simplified protections.
If I don’t register now, what happens?
Managed payments enhances the buying and selling experience on eBay. eBay will manage payments for most of its marketplace sellers by 2021, and all sellers will eventually be required to have eBay manage their payments in order to keep selling on eBay. If you receive a notification, we encourage you to register before the deadline to avoid any business interruption.
Registration allows you to get your business ready early for managed payments. You can register in a few simple steps, including verifying your business information and providing a bank account.
Does managed payments support direct deposit to PayPal accounts?
PayPal direct deposit accounts are not compatible with managed payments at this time. Sellers enabled for managed payments must link a bank account (not a PayPal routing number) to receive their payouts. Please make sure you provide only a bank account, where the name, address, and business information (if applicable) on the bank account matches the name and information provided to eBay.
@kerley he's right. It will be ebay, and not you, offering buyers the option of paying through paypal from now on. So they'll pay ebay by paypal, and ebay will pass the money to you in your ebay account. The info is here
https://sellercentre.ebay.co.uk/selling/managed-payments- everywhere it says "you can" or "the opportunity" it really means "you must" and "the only choice". You won't be able to offer buyers your own paypal because "ebay will be managing payments" for you from now on.
@joebristol, if ebay says you've been paid, it should be in your ebay account. You no longer get to see how they paid etc. Is it sat there? If you want it in your own bank account you need to withdraw it. i.e. from what you say the funds have "arrived". Buyers won't be happy to wait while you transfer funds between your own accounts. This is going to cause a lot of confusion as sellers move over to managed payments I think.
exactly @ savoyad, i can imagine some sellers will now wait till moneys are in their bank account to allow them to pay at the post office to ship, as opposed instant at paypal.
its gonna be a farce for a while.
that said amazon have controlled monies for years
Seen a few listings recently that said any paypal payments would be refused/refunded.
PayPal still take a small cut when payments are refunded 😒
Weird. Why would sellers bother refusing then?
1) How does it take 2 days to get the money to you?
a) (my guess) it will be a lot easier to just say **** it and sent it by Shitl.
2) Why does the banking system STILL not work on a bloody weekend?
a friend of a friend had a 60 day notice on his bank account as he was transfering circa 500 to a grand a month from paypal about 6-7 years ago, all ebay sales.

@whatyadoinsucka That's a long way from someone selling a few quids worth or the odd hundred every month or so. That's second income level regardless of what the actual profit was.
Sounds a bit crap. Having the payment go straight into PayPal is quite useful. eBay's postage site is frequently down and lacks some preferred options so I often have to do it on PayPal. Suppose anyone that doesn't want eBay paying straight into their bank account now will have to set up a new separate one.
Thanks whatyadoisucka that is not how I thought it was working so I was wrong there.
So basically I won't get my money for 4 days while eBay 'hold' it for some reason but I post the sold item when the money is in pending state. Not sure why it takes 4 days to get the money (see eBay are using clearing nonsense) when money these days moves around within minutes.
I’m in cash management for a large bank - when you do a PayPal withdrawal they must be using the faster payment infrastructure which is basically 24/7 availability. So when I get paid to PayPal I can go and select withdrawal and have the money in my account within seconds.
It seems like eBay are taking the payment instantly and then sitting on it until the next working day - then probably sending it via BACS without saying in those words that’s what they’re doing. Funds show as paid but then says ‘pending’ in my app. I assume that means they processed a BACS run yesterday and I’ll get funds tomorrow but it’s all a bit vague.
All seems odd and a bit outdated really. A buyer pays a person by PayPal but the Paypal payment actually goes to eBay instead of the buyer who then slow down the process and send the seller the money 1-4 days later.
At first I thought it was a way of them holding loads of funds for their own benefit but they claim they won't be getting interest from the money while they 'hold' it.
Just came back to ebay after a couple of years as I needed to sell some old bits of camera gear and a couple of toys. Never was a big user (feedback 90 at 100%)
So sold 3 things and I've had an email telling me to register for VAT and eBay is holding on to all my funds for a month! What a waste of time. As soon as the last couple of items have sold I'll just close it. Really can't be arsed with this nonsense.
VAT for selling a couple of used personally owned items?
Yes. Obviously same email as @Dickyboy. I just binned it as I'm about £84,700 short of the threshold! Whats more annoying is ebay won't release my funds until the buyers have given me feedback or 1 month whichever is quicker.
