Been told by a friend that alot of TNF stuff on ebay is fake and I've bought a TNF unused softshell on Ebay for not very much money. I've just discovered (after much research) it's a jacket that isn't due to be launched in the UK until Autumn. It only appears to be available to the press. For some reason, the seller didn't know it's model name (or didn't want to say what the model name was). I'm now a bit worried that I've bought a fake or something stolen.
These are the details of the add

Anyone with experience of fake garment? How easy is it to tell that they are not the real thing? does this sale seem a bit dodgy?

Ta 🙂

could be that it's a pre-production sales sample that is being sold off?

find the label on the inside, there should be a number of lables all stitched into the seam. you need to look for the TNF logo on a tiny label. I think there is one that has a kind of hologram on it too.

Could you post a close up of the logo on the chest? the fakes tend to be 'too perfect'.

Call the distributors and send them a couple of pics and get them to tell you what they think. I bought a Mountain Equipment jacket and had the same thoughts but ME looked at the photos I took and said it was fine.

lots of pre production stuff ends up with people who'd actually use it. some of those people have enough stuff and sell on spares. A friend works in outdoors shops and is/ was sponsored for various outdoors endeavours. used to dontate some top notch gear to raffles for mountain rescue/ lifeboats etc as he simply had so many coats/roll mats/ socks/ boots/ tech t-shirts. could be this is the same? Could be fake but if the qualitiy is good enough and you got it for a bargain then why worry?

highclimber, I haven't received it yet, above is a copy of the sellers ebay photo. So, would a fake be unlikely to have all the labels inside? I presume the real thing would have TNF labels and polartec labels.

it will have a TNF care label but some of the labels will be missing like the ones I mention. I would expect that it is genuine but if you are unsure when you get it is to take it to you local TNF stockist for assesment.

another tell tale sign is the DWR coating. the fakes generally don't get treated and you just need to spray with water to test if it hasn't.

hmmmm could be a demo model. mountain equipment used to do lots of demos/trial models and sell them through magic mountain in glossop their outlet shop after they had finished testing them or got them back from magazine tests. You could get all sorts of unique wonders from them. It could be similar thing

or

More fake than Jordan's fun bags

Overpriced - sometimes. Shite - no.

Some TNF stuff I wouldn't buy, some is excellent.

Too true. Summit and flight series stuff is pretty good (some of it)

Is it a UK seller? Sometimes it states the product is in UK but please allow up to 21 days for delivery 😉

I bought a TNF fleece jacket on eBay once. It was supposed to be Windstopper and size L. I had a waterproof TNF jacket in large that I bought in a shop so knew large will fit me fine. What came was completely different fit. Wider than regular TNF large but with shorter sleeves. It had Windstopper written on the sleeve but dish cloths would be better quality as no way the jacket was windproof. Just a crappy fake. If it's too good to be true it probably is...

Your jacket is a size Medium, but the pit to pit is 22", I'm pretty sure Large is something like 20-21" so the sizing seems a bit off...

TNF stuff is a bit expensive but the flight series windstopper soft shell I have is a great piece of kit.

EBay has loads of fakes and they are mostly jackets, crappy materials that have gore-tex labels attached. You will have to wait and see.

[edit] the jacket from the Outdoorsmagic website looks like the inside of the material is much darker than the one from the eBay photo [edit]

TNF have a dedicated group of staff who browse the internet auctions (and other sites) for fake items but they aren't 100% effective and there are still those that slip through.
The chances are that this item is genuine and even if it isn't its most likely that it was made in the same factory by the same people but was smuggled out before QC checks and could have a number of flaws the most common of which I have mentioned above but fundamentally it will be the same as the genuine ones.

If it looks different from what is available elsewhere dont waste your time it is a fake.

I'd not trust the "Ooh it's got the labels" method either, if it can be made it can be faked.

my tuppence worth- don't know whether it's fake but....
seller name see_you_next_tuesday doesn't instil confidence.
recent buy it now listings are all brands that are regularly knocked off (roxy, Paul Frank etc).

Jamie +1

Tbh, if you want discounted TNF stuff, GoOutdoors aren't bad. They buy a lot of discontinued/last season's stock and knock a bit off. At least you know it's genuine. Clothing is too easy to rip off these days.

I think Gaynors in Ambleside does loads of preproduction/ sample type TNF stuff.
I bought a snowboarding jacket a few years ago that was a prototype. It ended up being produced but not in the colour mine is. All the TNF preproduction/ sample stuff at Gaynors is size medium, so yours could be ok.

There's a TNF/Colombia factory shop near my wife's folks. Sometimes it has end of line clearance stuff like full body Goretex suits (for Everest/Polar expedition use) in XXXXL sizes, and sometimes it has an absolute mountain of super cheap stuff sans labels (all in medium) which is ex-demo or samples, but lately it's had a load of naff stuff at slight discounts 🙁

Summit and flight series stuff is pretty good

Yeah - a lot of my biking gear is summit/flight range, bought super cheap from the above. Like super-light Apex softshells that are slightly stretchy - brill stuff.

Does it matter if something's fake, if it's cheap and it works as well?

Arrived today, has all the correct labels and TNF hologram, appears to be completely genuine. I'm now really curious how the seller came by a jacket which isn't due for release in stores until Sept/Oct and didn't appear to know what they had for sale.

hmmm. I have a Sombrio jacket I bought off ebay which turned out to be a prototype - I contacted sombrio UK to question the finish. The seller did offer me my money back, but I just lunched out on sending it back, still have it. The reason I mention it is the photo you show rings a bell... nice floor tiles...

When you say "question the finish", what do you mean?. The floor tiles are the same. What was the answer from Sombrio?. I've given positive feedback now, so I'm stuck with it, but it does appear to be completely genuine. I didn't pay much for it, so I'm not unhappy, but would like to find out if it is what will be released in Autumn at full RRP.

I've checked their history, there's nothing from Sombrio, doesn't mean they don't have other logins tho. This seller is in Cardiff, what's yours?

Call the distributors and send them a couple of pics and get them to tell you what they think

I had a similar discussion a couple of years back with a mate who is in local gov trading standards, about whether it is an offence to knowingly buy/own counterfeit goods (fake watches in this instance). It's a grey area in his opinion, because while most of the legislation is targeted at people making a profit from counterfeiting there is a clause or something that refers to 'causing a loss' by virtue of buying or using known counterfeit goods. I don't remember exactly what he said, it was a while ago and a grey area but if you took the jacket to TNF for their opinion and they said it was fake, I think they may certainly be entitled to seize the jacket as you would effectively be infringing their trademark. And while I think it would be unlikely that you'd face any other action, you might end up with no jacket at all.

If you want guaranteed branded stuff, buy from proper channels.

banana, the TNF factory shop at our local outlet village regularly sells pre-production samples-I got a jacket which had stitched in with the labels samples of all the other fabric colours it was available in!

As others have said this is the most likely explanation-they work in the trade and are selling off pre-production or demo samples.

No, but cheap fake things rarely work well!
