I must be getting stoopid in my old age, but i never relised e-bay took a cut of the final selling price.

Sold a bike for 450.00 and ebay trousered 43.00.

Never again will I cross the ebay threshold.

"never relised e-bay took a cut of the final selling price."

They've always done it, how did you think they (or any auction house) made money?

Though the 10% odd + paypal fees they take now take the piss a bit.

yea if you go ebay you have to factor about 10% in fees... Plus then the joy of paypal (owned by ebay I believe).

It has always worked well for me just gotta remember the bite at the end. 😥

Any other options out there for selling at auctions? I've gone off ebay myself lately...

stw classifieds are your freind. Buy the guys a pint every now and again and we're all happy. I'd rather get 10% less on here than go to ebay, tbh.

IA.
Never really given it much thought on how they make money, just assumed the listing fees covered everything.

No, thankfully not paid via paypal.

If anyone can suggest where we sell this cabinet and desk it would be appreciated. Somewhere near Southampton would be best.

out of curiosity, what would the fees be like if you used your local auction house to sell goods?

Can anyone here remember Yahoo's auction, going back a few years, but I used to sell quite a bit on that service & it was free!

Maybe Google should do an auction site 😉

From the T & C of my local auction house:-

All charges are subject to VAT at the current rate with specific exceptions.
Vendors Terms and Conditions of Sale.
1. Commission is charged at the rate of 20% on the hammer price of each Lot with a minimum charge of £3.50 per Lot whether sold or not. Lots selling for £23.50 or less, or unsold against a reserve will attract a charge of £3.50

Buyer Terms and Conditions of Purchase

1. The Purchaser to be the highest bidder who will pay the hammer price plus a premium of 20% plus the current rate of VAT thereon.

So 10% to E bay is quite cheap in comparison ...

With a good bit of feedback behind me I have had quite a lot of success in running an auction and agreeing a good price with someone who wants it quickly, then ending the auction. I have been able to find local buyers too, but that doesn't always happen.

In that set of T&C is its the buyer that covers the Auction House's Fees not the seller though.

looks to me like both, though I may be wrong. There's fixed charges to the buyer when the lot doesn't sell.

Buyer's premium is quite a common concept.

WCA, I wouldnt keep a nice table like that against a radiator. It'll dry out and split.
