Any recommendations for a cheap (free) little package to take my DVDs and convert them to Mpeg 4 or whatever I need to play them through Itune/Ipod?
I currently have an old programme (Imtoo DVD) which will convert stuff to AVI and I then have Any video converter to convert it to MP4 which works but take ages and the quality when played on my Ipod Touch is just about ok.
I don't want to convert loads of copy protected movies just a few riding and naff films for occasional Ipod watching.
I've found a few free downloads but they all turn out to be trial versions which stick a watermark on the video or limit the converted film to 5 minutes.

Cheers, just tried it and the free version applies a watermark to the ripped video like the others I've found. Full download is only around 20 quid so not the end of the world I guess.
Handbrake and select the iPod preset. It's free, no watermarks etc.
If on Windows, you might need to install DVD43 as well (removes the copy-protection on the fly so that Handbrake can read the disc)
I used to use Imtoo to convert straight form DVD to ipod video, Thought there's was free??
if not i now use Xilisoft DVD ripper ultimate 5 (have a look on youtube for registration details)
If I ever did this, I would use Handbrake & DVDFab - search on Google for instructions.
Both are free & there are no watermarks etc.
The quality, I'm told, is brilliant. 😉
It is brilliant as it uses the x264 encoder.
In high profile mode it will rip a dvd into a 1gb file with 6 channel audio which to my eyes is indistinguishable from the original.
In ipod mode its great and outputs tiny file sizes
videora on filehippo, free and easy
DVD Decrypter I use to rip the files to the HDD, then I use handbrake to code it for the iPhone.
It works very well, handbrake chruns through a DVD in minutes, but the slow part is copying the files to the hard drive.
I've used DVD fab too, but I found it seemed slower to encrypt the mp4 file ... the whole process just seemed slower than using 2 seperate programs.
fisha +1
Although the whole process generally takes about the running time of the DVD from 'insert DVD' start to mp4 finish.
