super boring tech question
is this even possible - it seems it works for the pictures but no-one seems to be able to sort the sound (after various forum searches) unless you have a post march 2010 mac which i dont (feb 2010 if you need to know)
i asked in the apple shop and they gave me a minidisplayport to HDMI cable which should work but the sound doesnt.
i might just give up - anyone know a workable solution?
apple tv works brilliantly. That was my solution to the same problem.
I know nothing about Macs but, can't you just go from the headphone jack to a pair of phono connectors? 's what I've done with PCs since the early Cretaceous.
Cougar's suggestion does work - that's what I did.
By the time you have bought all the adaptors and cables, though, you could have bought an Apple TV (and the cheapest HDMI cable money can buy)...

As Cougar says, just come off the headphone port for your audio. Should just need a 3.5mm > Phono cable....couple of quid for a generic one.
My solution is currently to use a 3.5mm jack to go from the Mac to the amp, then using the minidisplay port to 15 pin PC adapter plug thingy to display the picture using my TV's "PC" mode.
It works, but my wife hates the cable mess.
an apple use a:
vga to dvi port
i use a vga to 30pin for my ipad
and u'll need a vga cable (used for pc monitors or projectors)
My MacBook Pro is a few months older but should have the same port as yours. I use an adaptor from the laptop, and have an HDMI or DVI cable from that to the TV (can't remember which). Works perfectly. As you say, the sound won't work as the pre March 2010 standard doesn't support sound, so you need a cheap cable from your audio port (I use 3.5mm to 2 phono which goes into the back of my CD player).
You can get all of the above for less than £30 and it works just fine. I used UK HDMI for my cable and adaptor.
I'm interested in the answer to this but my telly is older and has nothing more advanced than s-video or the set of three, red yellow and white ones. Is there a simple answer for me or is it a non-starter?
you need a mac to male vga then the other end of that has a female vga to rca (3 colours) cable
you only need to plug in the yellow cable as thats the video feed for the red and white get a jack to phono and put the jack into the mac and phono (red n white) into the other red n white cables
Cheers. Looks like I've got some shopping to do.
cool, now the forums back up i can read the responses - glad there is no 'one cable suits all' solution - the missus will have to lump it
