Just been discussing this with my boss, his licence allows him to drive vans, small (non articulated)truck , vans with trailers etc... the whole lot basically, he passed his test years and years ago.

Mine only has a car and something that appears to be a milk float on the back, I passed in june.

So whats the craic here then, do I have to do another test for minibus etc?

If you passed before sept 1997 you can drive non articualted trucks upto 7.5 tonnes and minibuses up to (i think?) 8 passengers.

After that date, you can only drive upto 3.5 tonnes.

Which is poo, cos ambulances weight about 4 tonnes so I had to do an HGV test (about £1000 all in) just to drive ambulances slightly bigger than the ones I used to drive.

I tihnk you can still drive a minibus, so long as its not for "hire or reward" i.e you don't get paid or anything (ideal for charitees etc)

C1 is 7.5 tonne, C1E is 7.5 plus trailer i think, D1 is mini bus, D1E with trailer. B relates to cars, A to motorbikes FKLNP is i think tracters, milk floats etc. weirdly, mine includes "tracked vehicles" (I'm gonna get me a tank!)

minibuses up to (i think?) 8 passengers.

I think 8 passengers is the limit for a normal car licence - with minibus entitlement it's rather more. I've certainly driven a Transit minibus with seats for ~12.

I was gutted, I passed about 6 months before the changeover - didnt realise it at the time and spent the next few years towing a 25ft boat on a trailer the length of the country. Now I have to take a rediculously expensive test to tow every once in a while. Peed off.

I think a lot of people might be unaware of what they actualyl can and can't drive. You see people towing trailers and caravans and assume everyone can. I've got a friend who used to work in land conservation which involved using 12 seat landrovers and trailers. It came to light one day that almost all of the staff were driving both illegally and were totally unaware of it.

A bit of exposure to class 7 stuff could be useful for commuting in the dark 😉

You tend to get an armed escort with class 7 stuff though.

I've got the newer type 🙁

Which means at work, I can't tow anything more than 750kg behind my 3.5t transit (their lightest trailer is 800kg!) but at home I could tow a 1500kg trailer behind my Mondeo on my existing license, even though its a more unstable combination.

And it'll cost me £800-1000 to take the trailer test, which I'm going to need 🙁
