I know nothing about the subject of weed, canabis, hash or any other 'stuff' that gives a 'high'.

Is it safe to drive after partaking?

it's not safe to drive after partaking. but if you rub your eyeballs with LSD afterwards it seems to lessen the affects 😆

No it isn't. Why do you ask?

Depends on the individual, grade and quantity, but IMHO generally no.

There's a reason that Shaggy isn't ever allowed to drive the Mystery Machine.

But serious answer before chaos descends - tests would suggest that an "experienced user" would perform safer than a first time or infrequent user. There's a vid online showing various user group's behaviour behind the wheel in a controlled environment.

Probably best not to.

Bit of a strange question though 😕
I'm fairly sure most people just "know" the answer, even if they don't have much experience personally.

I heard of one study where they reckoned it made you a safer driver, go figure..
I'll put 50p on ten pages and a lock..

legally there is no safe limit and studies of people who are given it show it impairs their driving - though the affect is less for habitual users

Like drink driving you may be able to do it without anyone being injured but your ability to drive well will be reduced

Its an interesting question with no real conclusive answer. Little proper research but what has been done shows little detriment at levels of a spliff or two.

anecdotally tho is a different matter - It would appear if you are concentrating on driving there is little impediment but its harder to retain that concentration.

For me from the research I have read there probably is detriment but that detriment is hard to measure - and is far less than drink driving or even perhaps driving when sleep deprived.

This is complicated by the fact that cannabis and alcohol even when the alcohol is at levels below that needed to fail an breath test is certainly impairing and hat cannabis is detectable for a much longer time than thee drugs effects last

I can't see there's an issue as long as your are concentrating on the oh look, a squirrel!

some people smoke so often that they become used to it and function quite normally having had 'a smoke.'

other people will be semi comatose after 'a smoke'.

Referring to weed here. Crack/ spice/ ice all quite different.

Too complicated to say yes or no. but i'd lean towards no, as the effects have not been acurately recorded.

It's also worth beaing in mind that a limit (such as drink drive limit) will effect different people differently at different times - but we have to set a figure. NB i'm not justifying anyone driving over the limit, but just that some people will likely be more caplable over the limit than others under it.

Thanks for the sensible answers.

I'm a cyclist and someone who lives nearby is the type of driver that could cause injury or worse.

Yes I am naive.

But I'm near to blowing a fuse, causing a scene and it will not well.
Fed up with the stench too.

And breath.

I seem to recall the same said about alcohol.

Fed up with the stench too.

And breath.

Just not too deeply, eh?

19 pages, 1 ban.

Yesterday the bloke in the blue old 3series tailgating me and gesturing like he had rickets was probably smoking his own farts.

If you watch any of the Traffic Cops tv programmes, you'll see that there are 1000s of young fellas (probably shorties too) driving around smoking the weed. They're safe until a copper with a camera sees em.

Follow the science - but scotroutes eloquently describes my reservations with the research

One of the unwanted side effects of prohibition is that it becomes very hard to do research that is valid

No, its not safe to drive under the influence of any psychoactive substance.

Smoking every day for 10 years doesn't give you the magical ability to function normally when high, it's just makes being high feel normal.

It's illegal of course, the Police can test for it and whilst there isn't a legal limit to drive (because it's not legal) but their is a limit that if you're tested as being over you will be charged with 'drug driving'.

If you want to smoke weed and feel it should be legal (as I do) then you should do your part and smoke responsibly, a spate of drug driving convictions won't help the cause.

Not if you're driving a Dacia. In an Audi JU87 you can do what you like.

some people smoke so often that they become used to it and think they function quite normally having had 'a smoke.' but are actually laughably slower and clearly more stoned than they realise.

Seems to be my observation of friends at uni who took it too far, claiming it was 'safer than alcohol'.

Anyway, not the argument here, and just my 3 cents worth

I find a couple of pils and a bit of wacky backy takes the edge of the modern driving experience and makes it much more pleasant all round.

I think this illustrates the value of a sobriety test rather than a drug test. However you'll be generally better driving having had plenty of sleep, in a good mood, and without any drugs in your system (well except caffeine which we're told helps.)

The Nazis thought crystal meth was good for tank drivers though, so who knows about this and other stimulants.

Crystal meth was one of the cleanest highs I've ever experienced IMHO.
But that's probably because it wasn't bashed with anything to make it three instead of one to be fair..
I've been more off my tits on paste whizz.

Nasa filled the appolo 13 astronauts full of amphetamines - and that certainly caused some issue. amphetamines and driving would be a really bad mix IMO as it clearly affects your judgement

I know someone who took their test stoned. I reckon they should be allowed as they have been judged competent in that state.

And ww2 pilots flew successfully on dexadrine, but agreed, too much amphetamines seriously compromise concentration

Might affect your judgement, not sure about concentration.

Nope, concentration, you get fixated on one element of whatever task whilst on phet, I once had a very amusing afternoon watching two whizzing mechanics trying to fit a rear screen in the days when they were held in by filleted rubber seals, straight, a 10 to 20 minutes job, I was in f****G tears watching them fixate for hours on trying to get the seal "just so"

TBH too much caffeine affects my judgement and concentration levels - I have an empty jumpy consciousness if I drink too much coffee. I think I'd be safer after a small amount of weed than a large amount of coffee - except perhaps from the point of view of remaining awake at all, which is quite important.

In my opinion, if caffeine was taken I'm similar doses to other illegal stimulants, it would be farmore dangerous...

Anything that detracts from your concentration and motor skills makes you a less safe driver, with alcohol/playing with your phone at one end of the scale and things like changing a CD or talking to your passengers at the other. Being stoned is probably somewhere in between those 2 points depending on how stoned you are.

Sounds like they were concentrating too well 🙂

All those students taking it to revise and all the Drs prescribing the very similar ritalin for ADHD must be wasting their time

I'm not one to be able to recall or reference sources, but I remember seeing something years ago where some reasonably pukka science types had done some research and found that some people who habitually smoked drove better after a smoke - specifically, and perhaps unsurprisingly, calmer, smoother and slightly slower. IIRC they also found that, perhaps counter-intuitively, they also concentrated more effectively and consistently - iirc the hypothesis wasn't that this bit was a direct effect, more indirect and conscious i.e. driver thinking "I'm a bit stoned, better really concentrate on what I'm doing here"

This was, however, before the "skunk explosion" - most of the weed kicking about these days is stronger / less balanced and I wouldn't be surprised if you'd get a different result testing with today's stuff.

I have, a long time ago.
Been out biking, big climb, nice bifta in the sun, then hurtle down the other side. All good.
Driving home though, I had a green moment and had a complete "where the f***k am I and how did I get here" moment about 5 miles from home, just kept on driving until familiarity returned. 😯
