We will be in touch
Having seem The Man In The High Castle and now reading the book they mention this.
Why would they do this? How would they do this?
What happens to the Nile?
How high does the sea level in the rest of the world rise?
Surely they are losing a huge source of food in the sea.
The land wouldn't be needed as they now have all of Africa for the master race to live in.
I know it's just a book and the story has some huge holes in it so I'm just wondering why someone would even think of this.
Google 'Atlantropa'
Was a real albeit somewhat far-fetched proposal, would not have meant complete draining of the Med.
dam at the straits of gibralter and then let the sun do the rest
You would block off the Straits of Gibraltar and wait.
Without an inflow from the Atlantic the Mediterranean would naturally dry up or a good chunk of it anyway
Google 'Atlantropa
That's interesting , sounds like a good idea.
Of course these days we would want the make Africa further away from Europe rather than nearer.
I shall seek further reading.
where would essex go for it's hols?
Interesting yes, nothing about it seems like it would be a good idea though. That's interesting , sounds like a good idea.

Same place, just more room for towels on the beach.
The Mediterranean evaporite deposits demonstrate that the Med was cut off from the Atlantic and at least partly dried out in the past.
will rivers stop flowing into the med to top it up..
it'd take along time to dryout,
If you dam it at Gibralter. Rivers wont stop flowing into it, but rate of evaporation exceeds the rate of inflow from rivers.
A quick google suggests the mean inflow is 0.038*10^6 m³/s, so ~1.2*10^12 m³ every year. The surface area of the med is ~2.5*10^6 km² or ~2.5*10^12 m².
So if the straits were dammed the level would drop about 48cm a year by my back of a fag packet calcs. It would take a while to empty.
It would take a while to empty.
anthropologically, yes.
geologically, that's the blink of an eye...
It wouldn't empty, it would fall to a level where rivver inputs equaled evaporation from the reduced surface area.
perhaps worth damming Straits of Gib anyway to offset sea level rise flooding mediterranean cities.
Could we divert the Med to the Red Sea (and block the Suez Canal)? That'll cut out a fair bit of inflow and shouldn't be too tricky
Fascinating stuff cheers
Apparently a dam could mean better biking weather for us rather than early arrival of the next ice age.

Not sure how this holds with more recent climate projections...

the only link to the red sea is the suez canal?
Sorry, that should've read divert the Nile to the Red Sea.
Although it has got me thinking. Could we divert some of the inflow from eastern end of the Med out through the Red Sea, too, via Suez? That seems a lot harder but maybe some scope for some hydro

apparently this thread does need the actual facts 😉
Isn't this kinda happening already? Africa is moving towards Europe/Iberian peninsula. At some point it will collide with Gibraltar.
What would the effect be on low lying areas of Europe (and the world)? All that extra water has to go somewhere... By how much would the draining/evaporation of the Med raise sea levels outside of the Med?
Would we not be left with a gigantic Dead(-Med) Sea? The rivers bring in minerals that don't evaporate making the water mass more salty over time.
Strait (not Straits) of Gibralter - there is only one.
👿
You get upset about Straits? At least the ****er knew how to spell it and didn't use straights....
Where we're you on the "Their/there/they're", "none vs non", "should have vs should of" or even the "less vs fewer" threads?
Strait (not Straits) of [s]Gibralter[/s] Gibraltar
Oh dear. You are in dire straits with that post.
So some people are talking about draining the ocean?
No, that would be daft. Just the sea.
All the fish would have to congregate in a tiny stretch of water, fishing would be dead easy.
A long walk to get to your fishing boat though
So we'll get Donald Trump to do it once he finishes draining the swamp, right?
