A few years ago, Bill Gates poured some money into a research project aimed at determining the exact chemical compounds responsible for making toilets smell bad.

This was purportedly done in order that ways could then be found to neutralise those compounds and increase toilet use in developing countries, stopping sewage being washed into streams and rivers and so improve safety of water sources for cooking and drinking.
