now imagine what Vance would do

Pick a fight with Lily Savage over the best brand of eyeliner and threaten to nuke Liverpool in retaliation?

Todays random @threads post that made me chuckle

"Donny doesn’t plan—he reacts. he’ll see something on Fox News—or Nosferatu McGoebbels will pop his head into the Oval Office and blurt something—and off goes Donny to the races, inventing a response then and there. doesn’t matter if it contradicts what Donny said twenty minutes ago.there is no cunning. there is no plan. there’s just that family of raccoons that live inside Donny’s big vacant head, indiscriminately chewing through the wires."

Trump vs Carney now I see. An economically illiterate orange ape vs a former BOE governor. Who’s your money on?

I wonder if there is some scope here for a UK/Canada trade deal?

Surely there has to be some silver lining here?  Maybe we can offset some of the Brexit damage, with some of the damage caused by Trump?

It might help both sides a bit but not sure it will do much other than annoy Trump and be used by Farage as a Brexit benefit to the hard of thinking.

The trouble is, Trump is the more powerful in that equation, no matter the economical literacy.

It is time for the world to face up to the fact that the way to stand up to a powerful bully is to be united, breaking ranks to try and be the bully's friend or dreaming that you can be a bridge between the bully and the victims is just playing their game on their terms. The UK, EU, Canada, Mexico etc etc need to just start dealing with each other and sideline the states out of the equation. Otherwise everyone will lose out to the US fighting individual battles.

Everyone wants/needs Trump to CalmTF down and start sorting things rationally, so efforts in these first 2 months to get him back onside have been worth a try.

Seems clear he really doesn't want to be rational about these things, so yes, I agree the RoW need to be making it clear that if we can't work together with Trump’s America we will just ignore him and work more closely together to work around America.

Yes it will be harder economically but better to die a free man and all that.

I think we will quite soon reach a point where the world has to move on from listening to his inane dribblings and just get stuff done without him. He can bang his fists all he likes.

How are we defining 'the world' here?

Are we excluding the largest nation on earth by size (Russia) and by population (China)?

'The world*' has decreed that this is the way things are going to go from now on...

*Minus the two superpowers and Russia.

You can still smell a fart in a brisk breeze. But not for very long.

I’ve said this a few times before, but economic collapse could very easily be used by MAGA to entrench their position. And the economic contamination could help their far right allies in other countries as well. Careful what you wish for.

I don't think so. Bullies want to fight.  Being their friend whilst not sucking up to them is definitely the best way to manipulate the situation.  People like Trump feed on us vs them, and if you want any influence you have to make them think you are on their side.

I kind of hope so, but I am worried about what this may escalate into. Optimistically it could end Trump quite quickly, pessimistically who the **** knows.

I think if Canada (and the rest of the world) don't stand up to Trump then a stranglehold of oligarchy power will squeeze the life out of us for a long time, but the action required to break the stranglehold quickly is also going to be painful.

I genuinely think that would be a good option. Just for a week. Assuming no forecast cold spell so that people actually die as a result, it makes it clear that economic cooperation is in everyone's interests, and Trump doesn't hold all the cards.

Trumps supporters won't change their minds, whatever. But they are less than half the electorate.

I think we can only hope that the trade war removes the scales from American trump supporters eyes but I guess that will amount to eff all until trumps tenure or life ends.

Somehow missed this before posting, but that's exactly how I feel. This is going to be painful now or more painful later. Let's put our big girls pants on and get it done now.

Trump:

Can you imagine Canada stooping so low as to use ELECTRICITY, that so affects the life of innocent people, as a bargaining chip and threat?

What a schmutz.

He sticks tax on imports, blames the other country for it, sticks more tax on them, then says the other country are the bad guys?

Same shit... different day.

Meanwhile, in the background, get busy trading on the lower stocks, before "removing" the tariffs in a few days time and selling again.

See Tesla is down a big old chunk. Does Elon want to buy back some stock?

Why are Trumps posts about Canadian "electricity" in quotation marks? Doers he not believe in it or something?

You know how the UK and EU have frozen the assets of Putin supporters?

Is it about time we added three more names to the list?

Vance doesn't have anything worth freezing over here but the other two definitely do.

I think Fox News is key here. Without that mouthpiece and sycophancy, Trumps support would plunge.

So what can be done to negatively impact Murdoch and get him to switch their editorial stance?

Ontario are sticking a 25% Surcharge on the electricity being supplied rather than a Tariff so the New Yorkers, Minnesotans and Michiganders(?) will be paying Canada which is very very funny.

Quebec are considering doing the same to Massachusetts.

It's not getting much coverage here but Fox News are already toning down their support.

There's a bit of hyperbole around it but it's happening

yeah I noticed that earlier.  So, the US impose import tarriffs, which Americans pay, while Canada impose surcharges... which Americans pay. I don't immediately see the 4D-chess-very-stable-genius angle here...

Some bits of Fox are, but the bit that MAGA boomers watch; Laura Ingham, Sean Hannity, all that nonsense, is still 100% behind Trump. Their latest tactic is when Trump does stupid things, just blame the democrats.

Apparently the Nazis used pink triangles to mark gay prisoners in concentration camps, or something like that. So Nazi anti-gay symbol.

Alright, calm down Satan! 🙂

Anyone else suspect Musk and his employe Trump are just trying to tank the market a bit, s&p500 etc? Before buying into it heavily?

Market manipulation would be totally on brand for them.

That the tariff war will hurt the average American on the street with price rises is just an 'unfortunate' side effect.

I said a couple of weeks ago that most of his billionaire cabinet will be selling shares so that they can buy them back in a months time after the tariffs were in place, a little bit of insider trading would be par for the course with most of the people he's put into government

The last time Trump was the President he didn't manage.  He then took a good beating for the following 4 years while in the wilderness.  He then gained from his experience and this time he comes back to take revenge on those who made his life rather unbearable. Trump will "double down" on all those that oppose him regardless, and he is supported by some "invisible" powers (the ones who are truly influential with money and swing both ways).  Be prepared to take a roller coaster ride for the remaining Trump presidential term because there will be plenty more to come.  Real estate property in the middle east etc, do you have? No? Then join the Trump roller coaster ride.

The thought occured to me to look up what documents he snuck out last time they let him charge -

"According to the indictment, the 31 documents describe U.S. nuclear weapons; foreign military attacks, plans, capabilities, and effects on U.S. interests; foreign nuclear capabilities; foreign support for terrorist activity; communications with foreign leaders; U.S. military activities; White House daily foreign intelligence briefings; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack"

And I thought to myself, I bet there's no way the Russians got to cop a look at that lot.
