A defence counsel is exactly that, they're paid to defend their client to the letter of the law and will have been chosen for their willingness to fight the defendant's case. Why are senators allowed to vote along party lines in the main during an impeachment? You'd struggle to say Trump's legal team persuaded you yesterday. And a 'trial' is all about the evidence presented. A secret ballot would help IMO.
