Just one press question to the FDA allowed last night. Birx and Fauci missing. Trump/Pence/FDA bloke just walked out after 20 mins.

WH press were tweeting they were being moved around (ones Trump doesn't like moved to the back of the room) but they refused. Some reports that Trump is going to stop doing the briefings unless there is some big (good?) news to report.

But then that Dr Birx woman was on some US news channel later saying that it was new information that the president had seen and he liked to talk that through out loud, digest that information etc.

So the fact that cleaning with disinfectant has a negative affect on the virus was new information to Trump, which he had just learnt about before the press conference?

I'm not sure why Dr Birx might think that suggestion is anymore reassuring.

But then that Dr Birx woman was on some US news channel later saying that it was new information that the president had seen and he liked to talk that through out loud, digest that information etc.

That prompted a further wave of criticism on Twitter, this time aimed at her for defending him.

it sounds more like her defending herself really. It wasn't new information from her or any of her advisors it came from a self-styled Archbishop and industrial bleach manufacturer

Grenon styles himself as “archbishop” of Genesis II – a Florida-based outfit that claims to be a church but which in fact is the largest producer and distributor of chlorine dioxide bleach as a “miracle cure” in the US. He brands the chemical as MMS, “miracle mineral solution”, and claims fraudulently that it can cure 99% of all illnesses including cancer, malaria, HIV/Aids as well as autism.

And while people band the word Dementia around in the relation to trump (presumably bleach doesn't cure that) Trumps problem with short term memory is really that the short term is all he grasps - his advisors are well aware that no matter what information you present him with what he takes away is the last thing someone says to him and the have to jockey to try and have that last word. But if he reads a tweet of glances at fox and friends between being briefed and speaking to the public then thats the last words he heard.

Lets keep in mind.... These people have killed children with this supposed 'cure'

ctk – I posted a couple of times about the Dems ditching Biden and running with Cuomo as their nominee, if the constitution allows.

This can't happen, can it? He was never a nominee, and they've just named the presumptive nominee? Or can they change their mind this late (I'm not up on how it all works in the US).

I think (stress on think) that it's the electoral colleges that actually decide the official nominee. Generally the colleges follow the popular vote in their particular state but there's no actual rule saying that they must do that but I've not heard of them doing so in recent years. Would have to look up when it last happened. It would obviously, being America, be subject to legal challenges. Look up "Faithless elector".

More likely would be Biden selecting Cuomo as his running mate for the vice presidency as that position isn't decided by the primaries and electoral colleges but by the presidential candidate and their political party.

Are there no sensible military leaders in the comically huge US military machine. Can one of them please arrange a coup?

Jamze & whitestone - I'm equally unclear about whether Cuomo could be appointed as the Dems nominee.
Biden as president would, I think, be for a single term only; Cuomo IMO would be good for two terms.

TLDR ...
What seems weird about this is he is killing his own voters.
Certainly on balance it seems like more Trump voters are going to try injecting bleach than non-Trump voters.

It looks like we are heading a similar way, BBC news reporting on a story and quoting No 10 spokesman attacking the press presumably because they don't like the criticism directed towards the government.

"He added: "'Public confidence in the media has collapsed during this emergency partly because of ludicrous stories such as this.""

I think public confidence in the news is higher than public confidence in our politicians!

I copied this from a Pam Ayres Twitter feed.

@PamAyres

At last, we have a cure for all!
Ailments large and ailments small,
Good health is not beyond my reach,
If I inject myself with bleach.

Radiant, I’ll prance along,
Every trace of limescale gone,
With disinfectant as my friend,
Like him,
I’m clean around the bend.

He seems to be in damage-limitation mode now. No briefings and furiously tweeting justifications for everything he's said and done. Yesterday's 'sarcastic' Nobel Prize tweet was another classic.

This one is interesting. A retweet, but he's implying that the Democratic States are under-reporting on cases (i.e. not doing the testing they could?) to keep the case fatality rate higher to keep the pressure up?

It’s not like we didn’t know that Trump was a blatant and unremorseful liar:

http://vm.tiktok.com/vFQfy9/

But the “it was sarcasm” defence is a new low.

Quite amazing to watch his supporters swiftly pivot (on Reddit, YouTube etc) from “it was a serious brainstorming question to his science advisor” to "it was clearly a sarcastic joke to reporters" 😳

If you missed it, we can only assume he was ranting about the Pulitzer Prize-winning NYT reporters, but got confused with the Nobel Prize and spelt that wrong anyway 🤦🏻‍♂️

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1254479607627231232 (tweet now deleted)

So he played the sarcasm card AGAIN!

But the “it was sarcasm” defence is a new low.

I think on two levels - in the context of a global health crisis in which his own populace are taking a heavy toll jokes are inappopriate. But the notion that it was sarcasm doesn't hold water anyway. His suggestions in regards to disinfectant could only be read as sarcasm if what he was saying was unrealistic or hyperbole, that it was some sort of deliberate red herring for the press to fall for. But in reality the administration of disinfectant as a sham cure for all sorts of ills was already happening - on the advice of Grenon. People have already been buying and using his industrial bleach as a treatment (and a source of false hope)  for range of illnesses and it was Grenon who told Trump that his 'Mulit-Mineral Solution' -  Chlorine Dioxide - would cure C-19.  Tragically parents had already been giving Grenon's disinfect enemas to their autistic children and of course a number of those kids have died.

Now those parents were clearly gullible but they didn't harm their children out of malice -  they were desperate  - they would have been sincere in their effort to help their child even if they were misguided. How utterly, utterly tragic- to live with that.

So Trump's defence of 'it was sarcasm' means he's saying that thee tradegies are suitable subject matter for a joke.

Open to discussing anything my arse. He’s not open to or capable of a discussion. I really feel sorry for normal Americans in all this I really do. If there is any justice in the world one day soon he’ll walk past a wind turbine and his ridiculous wig will drag him in and the blades will decapitate him. His wig will then live on to claim a new victim.

The thing is that it's assumed ingesting or injecting disinfectant is obviously stupid. But there are people out there that are not as well educated, who hear this from the President, who maybe don't have insurance for treatment, and above all may be desperate and 'willing to try anything'.

Why would you even risk misinterpretation, only an imbecile would say something like that.

An idiot too stupid to recognise himself as such, in fact an idiot who's convinced he's a genius. And he's got such a massive ego that he won't ever be told he's an idiot so he's surrounded himself with Yes Men and sycophants who are largely also idiotic. Or so power crazed that they're willing to overlook his dangerous idiocy for their own gain.

Anyone else watching the BBC newsfeed livestream of his presser?
When I tuned in he had some guy from Walgreens (pharmacy chain, own Boots) followed by a bloke from Krogers (supermarket operators).
Think of it in terms of johnson saying...and with me today, in addition to the scientific and medical johnnies, I have mr tesco and mrs superdrug to tell you how fantastically well I'm doing and how much they love you me.
Blatant electioneering; only to be expected.

He's crap at getting other people to pay for stuff.

Remember the wall?

China does need to take a good look at itself after all this but so do many other countries including us and the US.

If you think THIS is the reason China needs to take a good look at itself then you’ve not looked at much of the last century.

I'm slightly concerned i may be the President of The United States:

“One hundred idiots make idiotic plans and carry them out. All but one justly fail. The hundredth idiot, whose plan succeeded through pure luck, is immediately convinced he’s a genius.”

So Trump doesn't know why there are increased calls about ingesting chemicals and it's definitely not his fault. I'm hoping once he's out the lawsuits are many and leave him and his family destitute and in prison.

So Trump doesn’t know why

There's a long list of things that Trump doesn't know.

Trouble is, he's too stupid to know he doesn't know them; so he thinks he's a genius.

I think the scrutiny on the whitehouse more broadly will be interesting.

When he blurts out crap at a press conference because he's stopped looking at his notes thats his fault. When the 'Whitehouse' is tasked with trying to clean it all up they often openly lie in their attempts to try and reframe his thoughtless bullshit. But those guys don't have the immunity that the president has - a president may be immune from civil damages resulting from their official acts (but not from criminal charges) but I doubt that immunity extends to other staff.

The doctored videos, the withholding of details from 'that phone call' and so on - they don't just go out on Trump's twitter but through official whitehouse channels, and in the aftermath 'just obeying orders' doesn't really cut it.

We've got to be able to form our own opinions about the culpability of China without looking through the prism of Donald Trump. Witness how the press jumped on him when he banned flights from China. They allowed their / our obsession with him blind them to the realities of the situation.

I'll take that Iain M Banks quote but caveat it with the thought that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Got to agree with you there Frank, Boris wrapping himself in household brand names to make himself look good. Pure electioneering. Pure Trump. Puts an end to any idea that he would come through a brush with the virus a in any way chastened. A changed man my arse.

Remember how Boris announced that Burberry and Barber had been caĺed in to produce PPE. I saw the woman who represents the workplace clothing manufacturing industry on the news, she couldn't understand why the gov't hadn't approached them instead, they produce workplace clothing for half the population as it is. Especially as the aforementioned luxury brands would have to approach her industry to ascertain the relevant standards and production methods before they could begin.

All the kings horses in so many ways.

Probably in the case above, Burberry and Barber realised there was a PR opportunity (if you're being cynical) or just genuinely wanted to help so volunteered. The government as ever was just pushed along by the tide. the thought of pro-actively going out to and coordinating the part of the garment industry most suited to gear up to make scrubs would never ave occurred to them or made for great sound bites if it did. This total lack of management from the government has been prevalent throughout this crisis.

Stumpyjohn,

Yup, this exactly. The thought that 'it would never have occured to them' is the really frightening thing. You're not even being sarcastic when you say that.

Oops, going all Boris on a Trump thread. Easily done though, it's not so much a case of crossing threads, more a case of a nut with two threads.
