It's a reference to what Trump threatened to do to Hillary if elected.

So he is going to charge her then?
That'll be interesting.
Good to hear him bigging up the forces that he's never served in. I wouldn't want to be in the US Army at the moment. 😐

The victory speech is so unlike the campaign it's hard to know who they elected. Is the ranting nutter the real Donald or the reasonable politician the real one
.

May gave a similarly contradictory speech.

No, not at all. The majority voted for Brexit, the majority voted for Trump based on the information provided. Just because you don't like the results doesn't mean that the system is broken.

On the contrary, it confirms that it is still working. An outsider has beaten the US establishment through the will of the people and despite the best efforts of "the machine" to prevent it.

Democracy is very much alive and kicking even if it throws up bad results. Not that there was a good result possible here.

He's going to make America Great Again, obvs.

Oh and make American roads, railways, schools, hospitals and the military second to none, the absolute best on the planet. Don't know about the rest but there's a LOT of road in the US and a lot of it makes UK roads look snooker-table smooth. Mind you he said he's going to get millions of Americans back into work as part of the same section so maybe he's thinking The New Deal or maybe slave labour.

He has made some massive promises which will be very difficult to deliver. This could see his support evaporate within two years if the white, blue collar workers do not see positive change.

Lets hope he does not blow up the world in the interim!

Is Straight talking:
The economy's f----d.

We're in so much debt that only by cutting most of our social service budget or armed forces to nothing can we survive.
The grown up scientist are telling us we're killing the planet.

Teamhurtmore +1

Democracy is great, even if I don't agree with the result.
However, like Brexit campaign, it does seem that unrealistic, unfair or lies have been told to help the campaigns along. Therefore some of our democratic process is less fair than it should be.
Nothing new under the sun however.

And where exactly will the money to do that come from? Anyone can say these things, but ultimately, if you push one facet, another has to suffer, there are no free lunches. DT himself doesn't pay much Tax, so why should anyone else, and without Tax dollars, no one is building anything......

Be assured that being in or out off the EU has not wrecked your daughters future

That's the worst assurance ever.

Her future is far less likely to involve living abroad, and the economy she will be trapped in is going to be far weaker than before. But whatever, at least we've got meaningless words to give her.

For ****'s sake.

Depends what you think the aim of democracy is. Deliver majority rule - sure, it works. Deliver the best option - it's totally broken.

Because the people don't know good rule from bad rule. Democracy (obviously) only works when people make the effort to understand the issues. When they can't be bothered, or are not discriminating when it comes to media, stupid shit can happen. The biggest arsehole with the most money wins. As we've seen.

Come on molgrips, the vast majority of people in the world are trapped in economies worse than ours. They're the ones who need freedom of movement more than overprivileged English kids.

On another note, is Trump a warmonger (wondering about the mushroom post from kimbers)- I've always seen Clinton as the owner of the aggressive foreign policies, with Trump being more insular.

Once again Press and polling companies in particular have been proven very very wrong. America has rejected what has gone before and they have rejected a really terrible candidate in Hillary Clinton. What they have chosen we all fear is worse. We might not like it but democracy has overturned the political elite.

The rest of the world will have to work out how we are going to interact with the US going forward and what the impact will be on them.

Part of the reason that Trump has succeeded is that he can afford it. Many more worthy and outstanding candidates are out there, but they do not have the money, or can garner enough support.

@manton Clinton Campaign spent $1bn and Trump $500m. She had far more money and people on her term and she has lost conclusively.

And that sucks, but we weren't, and now we are. For no good reason.

That'd be like me coming to your house and smashing your windows and justifying it by saying that some people don't even have glass. And 500m people shared that right so it was hardly a niche thing.

On another note, is Trump a warmonger (wondering about the mushroom post from kimbers)- I've always seen Clinton as the owner of the aggressive foreign policies, with Trump being more insular.

Possible. If he's pro-Putin, he is probably less likely to start WWII. But the people of the Baltics should probably be more worried. I might have to (sadly) cross Finland off my list of places to move in 2 years' time.

Democracy (obviously) only works when people make the effort to understand the issues

... and then they go and vote.

It's the voting bit.

If your a bit thick and/or got so much going on you can't or won't find the time to understand what you're actually voting for, then that's when thing go bad.

Voting, when you're largely ignorant of the facts, and don't have much clue about the consequences of outcome, is the action of a moron.

Not knowing, is not a crime, but not caring is.

a really terrible candidate in Hillary Clinton

Her worst failing was not taking him to pieces in the debates and campaign. The email shite pales to insignificance against the tremendous character flaws and utter lack of content of her rival.

I didn't hear her ask HOW exactly he was going to make America great again, or what that actually means. Did I miss it?

Voting, when you're largely ignorant of the facts, and don't have much clue about the consequences of outcome, is the action of a moron.

Yes, but then they say 'get out and vote, whatever, people died for this' etc etc. Perhaps they should rethink that.

It's a very strange world we live in where being a racist, homophobic, narcissistic, bully, misogynistic false tan wearing, grab you by the pussy is now ok and how we should all live.

It democracy has been seen to be done, so almost half of the world thinks that way.

I'm once again forced to look at my friends and colleagues and question whether I like them or not.

Interesting times.

Now, what odds on Marine LePen getting elected in France?

Impact already being discussed on French TV I am told, with Brexit and now Trump the anti-establishment movement is very strong, countries are saying "our interests first". French where saying only Clinton could win and the US Ambassador had tweeted disrespectfully at Trump only a few hours ago (now deleted). I think the next test is the re-run of the Austrian Presidential Election in December.

Molgrips as you well know I think your kids future is much brighter with the UK out of the EU.

I will agree with you on that.

However this is probably down to neo-liberalism started [s]by Th[/s] in the early 80s. The principle that lets rich people walk all over the poor.

Fingers crossed this leads to a socialist revolution in the US and UK. I'll piss my pants if it does 🙂

I'd like to be the first on STW to congratulate Trump - with a musical tribute. Half the budget and he turned every media attack into a victory. What media portrayed as failings are sound qualities to middle America. It's a victory for idiot America:

Our grandparents had to deal with the war, our parents Cuba, the cold war and MAD. We had it easy for ages, technology changed our lives, things were ok, but now the shit's hit the fan and we have this to deal with.

Think about your grandparents reading the reports of Hitler rising to power; or your parents watching news reports about nuclear missiles on boats, and how they must have felt. Be prepared for some bad shit to go down.

Most likely it won't, and hopefully we'll learn from all this before it goes too badly wrong... But remember that most of us have lived in cushy stable times for a long time, and don't take that for granted.

I think you underestimate radical Islam, 911, Iraq and Afghanistan. Certainly had more direct impact on my family's current generation(s) than the cold war ever did.

Having said that... my mother worked at GCHQ and she was sent home to spend her final hours with her family during the Cuban crisis, which was a bit of a concern apparently.

There is a lesson for Labour in these results - don't take your historic base for granted. Wisconsin hasn't voted Republcan since Reagan, Clinton took it for granted and didn't bother visiting it, Trump won in Wisconsin.

It seems that the world is slowly being taken over by the racists, or perhaps we are all being played by a very cunning ex-KGB agent who believes the cold war is still his to be won.
