Squats and deadlifts once a week respectively without issue, decided to chuck in a few walking lunges on Friday with dumb bells after my squats and the quads and glutes have been killing me for the last 2 days. So much so that I have ridden this weekend.
Walking lunges are not usually on my list.
Why is is that you can do barbell squats which will hits quads big time and glutes to a certain extent and then do walking lunges which again is quads and glutes and get DOMS when the former doesn't and get raging DOMS. Is it because whilst it works the same muscle group it targets slightly different areas of the muscle?
It’s because it is unfamiliar with high eccentric stress
DOMS is your ticket to inevitable Gainz™
Lunges aren’t my friend, either.
I've no idea what you've been doing but I get DOMs a couple of times a year fell running and it's MUCH better after. Last year I actually went for a short run with DOMs which was painful but helped it get better quicker I reckon so exercise is good IME.
the more you do it, the less it'll hurt, within reason. Obviously you need to give yourself time to recover.
People complain about leg day, but often if you do it twice a week your recovery will be better. Also, i find that throwing in a few sets of legs during other sessions can aim recovery. Keep in mind these sets are low reps and low weight, just there to wake the muscles up basically.
Lunges aren’t my friend, either.
What have I done to upset you?!
Is it wrong that I love DOMS? Means I've worked hard, means the gains are on their way and generally makes me smile about the work done.
Similar story, i'm usually fine with squats & deadlifts, unless I do too many.
But barbell lunges have ruined me the last few times i've done them.
Squats are external rotation of the hips and lunges are internally dominant, different muscles innit.
