[#10538526]

Took up some decking and found this mystery chamber in my garden.

Concrete lined, around 5M deep, 2m diameter, solid floor. No pipes in or out except a blue one that come up out of the floor and is open.

Any ideas??

I was going to say Ice Chamber, but it looks too modern.

Access chamber for sewage perhaps? Check your deeds, might have access pipeworks on the plan.

Looks like a standard precast concrete manhole chamber. Have you poked around in that silt?

Wondered if it could be some temporary during construction for dewatering maybe. Or maybe was meant to be a soakaway.....

Septic tank that is now not needed due to a new main drain? At least that was the case at a friend's house in Walderslade, the council put in main drains after the house was built but before anyone moved in.

Dropped a rock down and it sounded concrete at the bottom too.

There were some mines in the area a long time ago, maybe a vent?

Those manhole covers are heavy! It nearly fell down the hole taking me with it. I'm never lifting it again!!

Steps built into it suggest something worthwhile.

Was there any plans for rainwater harvesting?

No recent updates - did you see the film from inside?

A neighbour was passing with a JCB so got them to find the corners and chatting with an architect to get the ball rolling on planning

but been too busy blowing things up for the last 4 months so its on the back burner

i have one of those in my garden.
about 9ft deep with a sewage pipe entering and exiting on the bottom.
in heavy rain it fills up halfway.

Do you have a cellar, or similar? Is it near to the house?
It could be a sump to deal with flooding, but it's deep. The other end of the blue pipe will be attached to a pump if that's the case

Plastic pipe suggests it was used for monitoring water levels at some point?

Recommend an Architect / Building designer Glasgow / Ayrshire ?

Blimey 🙂 I was about to make a hilarious "Blair Ditch" pun, and then realised I'd been beaten to it by 9 months.

Double check whether there are any other pipes entering or leaving. That would give you a clue. There might be one/some right at the top, just below the cover slab which are difficult to see.

What was there before your house was built? Looks like a very heavy cover for a back garden.

By the dimensions stated, it does sound waste water related. Who is your water utility - they may hold records of it on their GIS

My guess is that it's a holding and settling chamber for sewage and storm water and the blue pipe is an overflow, which would allow untreated sewage to escape straight into a nearby river.

It only takes 1mm of rain over that London for the sewers to overflow straight into the Thames, the new super sewer is supposed to prevent that. I remember finishing the London 100, shortened to 86 miles after biblical rain and the stink of raw sewage coming from the Thames along Chelsea Embankment was very strong.

Luckily I have a relative that works in the mapping section for the water company and they are looking into it.

House has been there about 6 years, before that it was farmland and before that there was a coal mine very close.

Not going back in as it's too risky lifting the cover on my own, particularly getting it back on. It almost fell down the hole a couple of times getting it lined back up.

These is a sewage/stormwater overflow outlet about 200M away. Maybe it goes there. Could always throw a rubber duck down then see if it pops out!
