Never done one before, and will probably never do one again. As my feet will get wet I hear it's good to avoid cotton.

I had a look on Wiggle and saw these two options:

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/inov-8-mudsoct-mid-twin-pack-ss14/

Either better than the other for this type of thing? I'm looking at pairs as there's two of us doing it and we can split a pack.

What is a mud run exactly (a run with some mud or a run specifically through lots of mud?) and how long is it.

If this is your first and last why not just wear any old pair of socks?

Running Bear socks are okay but beware the sizing if you have big feet, they run small
Also the quality can vary from sock to sock
They're cheap and comfy though

Wear the socks that you prefer to run in. They'll just get muddy.

I assume you have some decent shoes. Fell type work well for mud. Also, they're less likely to fall off. Seen plenty of folk having road shoes lost to mud suction. I know it's wrong to laugh, but...... 😉

Really?

A 'What sock?' question?

FFS.

Runners (uninitiated in the mysteries of Mtb) no doubt think the same of some STW threads?

Right about RB sizing, I'm also sure some are prone to shrinking too!

If you're just doing it once, any old sock.
If your planning on getting wet regularly then drymax maximum protection trail run socks have been a bit of a revelation as to how quick a sock can dry out.

gaffer tape is your friend

and its not wrong to laugh - used to do the Dovedale Dash every year and listening to the road runners moan and groan and fall over in the mud was one on the best bits

I do wonder how many shoes are at the bottom of the bogs at the Grizzly!

Depends on the shoes....

Seriously, the fit of your shoe will determine the type of sock. Tight fitting = minimal fit, roomier shoe = thicker sock.
