......folk buy things off here and put them on Ebay the same day to make a profit? Not only that, looking at the blokes history he has been using a Private account to bump the price up of both this item and previous ones!
Not going to name any names, just winds me up!!
That's Capitalism for ya...
I know mate, whinge over - got it out of my system now 😆
why does that piss you off?
if you believe ebay to offer a better price, sell your stuff on ebay. i think it's ok use ebay, you're allowed, same as he is.....
I think you are missing the point mate, he is banging the stuff on Ebay (fair play), then using a second account to bump the price up. The same private account has been used on numerous of his previous items. How would you feel if you won an item then found out the seller was bumping the price up himself?
Anyway, I thought the idea of the classifieds was to help people get rid of their unwanted stuff, not make a profit.
Would be interesting to see if he has made a donation to STW.
I put a wanted ad up here the other week for a road bike.
Some chap offered me a specialised tarmac carbon for £750 plus postage. Thought it seemed a bit steep for what was an oldish model so checked ebay for prices.
He'd only gone and offered to sell me a bike he'd bought 5 days earlier for £600
The cheek of it.
if you think he's using shill bids, then report him to ebay
isn't the idea of the classified to sell stuff to people who want it more than you do?
Anyway, I thought the idea of the classifieds was to help people get rid of their unwanted stuff, not make a profit.
Well, in principle, but it's a bit naïve to believe that though, isn't it?
Shill bidding is illegal though. Report him if you think he is, let eBay investigate.
As dave said report him to e bay
iDave - if they want it more than I do, why are they selling it the same day they buy it off here? Think I will report it to be honest, was only putting it on here to see what folk think and get it off my chest 👿
Are we talking about the Exposure light?
wanting something to sell it is as viable as wanting it use
that's fine but shill bidding isn't
I agree Dave, just annoyed I didn't get the chance to buy the item first, think I have my answer now so going to drop Ebay a quick e-mail and see what they think. My only worry is that they either don't have enough proof, or can't be bothered, and the guy gets away with it.
Roblerner - not commenting on the item mate, just in case I am wrong 🙄
No worries. But *if* you're right, and he sells it for £120 after buying it for £100 then he stands to make about £5 profit after all the fees. If he wants to go through all that ebay hassle for a fiver then I don't mind. Apologies if it's not the same person/item/whatever.
Shill bidding is another matter though. Get *whoever it is* reported.
Just found out about this. Thought I sold the light in good faith to a fellow STWer. The cheek is that he is even using my photos. I'll email ebay now. Not sure what it will sell for but surely after deducting ebay / paypal fees the profit can't be worth it. As for me I'll continue to buy and sell stuff on here in good faith.
Ever thought he may have bought it, got it in the ear and had to resell? no thought not
I think the OP point was that he is bumping up the price using a private account, not just the re-sell issue.
As dave said report him to e bay
no, why not just whinge about it on here. moan whinge, gripe complain, do ****all
how un_stw
As long as he is making his profit 'off site' I don't see the problem, you don't have to buy it...
if someone offers to buy something and you dont want it to be sold on check they arent a serial wheeler dealer.
But report him on ebay asap, even if its only been done a few times they should do him for it.
I'm selling some exposure lights on ebay and have received a link to this forum thread. I also note the comment from roblerner, though will note chunkymonkey message looks like a reference to an auction where mine is a buy-it-now?. However given the message to my ebay mailbox someone thinks it is a reference to me and accordingly I feel a response is necessary.
If this discussion is about my advert then you are wrong (if not please ignore my remonstrations and would be grateful if you would make this point). Both lights were purchased from Rutland water cycles (roblerner apologies accepted). I will add roblerner is right to question the point of making a £5er. I've got my wifes e120 on ebay and just sold my e120 for £2150, my intention is to buy 2 Whyte 146's. Do I sound like a guy who needs to go through the hassle of buying off here and selling on ebay for a £5er? The idea would not enter my head.
A couple of final points:
I've never purchased off singletrack (not sure if I've even viewed the singletrack classifieds?)
The purpose of selling stuff is to get rid of unwanted things and/or make profit depending on your perspective. If someone finds an opportunity and is able to develop a perceived value, fair play to um, who am I to judge? As said, I don't see the value in £5 compared to the hassle. My purpose is so I can upgrade to two exposure diablos and six packs. (5 quid, I'm still laughing).
Shill bidding, it is a breach of ebay policy, you are welcome to report me. I have nothing to fear and am happy with my ebay conduct. Besides surly those who enter into such run the risk of buying their own items? just rewards perhaps?
Step back and put this into perspective, there are much worst problems around the world to get bothered about.
Thisuldo - it isn't about you mate.
chunkymonkey- thanks for your prompt reply and clearing it up. Also sorry if my response was a tad heavy handed, though given the clear implication of having the forum link appear in my mailbox along with some of the comments I hope you understand.
It's tricky to police the classifieds and ensure that the spirit of the rules about using it to get rid of unwanted items is maintained in general. The more popular it gets the harder it is to protect. However, the policy stands. If we suspect anyone of profiteering, and by that we go further than just suspecting someone of making their living from selling eg. Bike shops pretending too be 'public' and include any individual who exploits our classifieds for profit, then we will look into it and potentially warn the user or perhaps suspend their account. We don't and can't catch every offender but we will respond to reports made directly via the report function.
If we find that someone has bought an item off our classifieds and then in a suspiciously short period of time puts the item up for sale again at a higher price, be that on our website or any other, then we will look at that as an abuse of our classifieds.
Our classifieds are free as a service to our readers. It is a condition of use that these terms are adhered to if the forum is to remain free.
Well the link from RR sort of gives a big clue to the user.....
I reported blatant shill bidding to ebay once - from feedback one user had "bought" about 6 motorbikes from another user over a period of about 18 months where his shill bidding had failed & they were stupid enough to leave some feedback, plus they'd bid on countless other items too.
All that happened is that the user, made all their auctions private from then on & now with ebay hiding bidders identities it makes shill bidding even harder to detect, in the end shill bidding suits ebay as it bumps up their fees - just another reason to avoid ebay if I can & buy / sell elsewhere 8)
I'd say the way that ad was worded is just untruthful.
How can he have used it a 'handful' of times - he'd owned it less than 2 days before it went on ebay?
And the bit about battery care's clearly twaddle.
