I guess we'll have to wait for the new forum to find out.

Edukator - you're scaring me!!

Glad I've been keeping a low profile on here to not get mentioned....or maybe I'm just too boring! Anyway, regarding Ed...he either has a photographic memory or as Teasel suggests, keeps files on everyone.

I recall on a previous Bike Forum, posting a photo in jest that upset him and he came out with all sorts of stuff gleaned from all my previous posts. I was shocked! I've always read his posts with interest since then, although having seen a video of him doing the oddest warm up routine whilst wearing Jesus creepers and socks....I'm in no hurry to meet him! 🙂

It's just my memory, Rockape, and given the heyday of Bikemagic was 10 years back I've forgotten most of it. Apart from the fact you ski and live in the SE it's all gone (there was a map on BM where everyone one posted their location, I can't imagine people doing that willingly now). I posted a thread on Google hacking and some jumped to the conclusion I'd Google hacked everyone on the forum. Singletrack has so many posters I remember less for each one, I'm struggling to remember your name, initials P? H???

Some people have become more cautious on the Net and a little less serious about it. I hope we've seen the last of girls getting unwelcome suggestive messages on their phones and members arranging a meeting in a car park for a punch up (one didn't show).

You linked a musical project you were involved in, Teasel, that's my mental image of you even though you've no doubt moved on from there, and it gave you a name, W.

Good old BM, I was late to that party, but it certainly had some interesting and entertaining threads!

Not seen that on STW of course, its far too civil! 😐

I sure did and yep, right again.

I still write but haven't performed for quite some time. Also, I'm 172cm tall nekkid so although shorter than average, not exactly a bloody gnome, you cheeky git.

🙂

Of course, if I'm slouching I stand short, which is quite normal - all that self-loathing and fear can weigh heavy on a man...

There's probably ~40+ usernames I recognise, and a smaller subset of those (maybe 20?) who I remember 'stuff' about, not because I specifically want to, but because my brain retains that kind of information.

There's a small core of about half a dozen posters who I actually deliberately skip over their posts (even mid-thread) now a I know they'll only be posting the same old nonsense over and over.

I like discussions on here, and there are a lot of people who post genuinely intelligent, reasoned, well thought out, and often amusing comments. Even when I don't agree I like reading and discussing in that way. I do not enjoy closed minded shouty people who are fail to comprehend that other views may be as valid as their own.

Oh, and the bike chat is useful too, I do miss some of the deeper more in depth threads of old though, seems the trend is for people post a greater number of shorter posts now, I'm convinced it leads to more reactionary comments and less thought put into replies.

I'm trying to spend less time on here these days, I pop in every now and again to see what's going on, but I'm definitely ready fewer threads, and posting in even fewer these days, variety and depth of content has gone down a lot 🙁

As someone else said (it was THM, I remember 😉 ), it's always amusing meeting other riders who have never heard of STW, hang around here too long and you get a very distorted view of the UK biking scene...

Oh, and I really want to see an un-redacted version of gofaster's spreadhseet!

I definitely pay attention to who is posting.

There are a few posters I'll skip the thread (mostly) if they've started it. I assume most people do that to mine tbh!

Then there are posters I'll skip virtually every post they post (or only skim it at best). Some just on 'political' threads, but one in particular I just CBA with so just won't engage.

There are posters I'll read the thread because they've started it.

There are posters that I (generally) disagree with but I'll read because they seem reasonable enough people and I like to hear an 'opposing' view if its coherently stated. Or people (like geetee) who seems to evaluate what's said and is ready to change his tune if he's been called out. Difficult to argue with reason!

And there's even some I actually know/have met in real life. Just as long as they aren't short and force you to drink a third pint... 😉

I wouldn't ignore a thread based on who posted it (don't pay that much attention).

BUT: I do ignore/not read/not post on threads on certain subjects because I can fairly accurately predict what kind of a response I'll get from certain people, and it'll generally not be a positive one.

I rarely ask people if they post on stw.

It's like listening to the Archers - knowing who they are in real life spoils the mental image you have of them 😉

Oh that completely

I've got a mental image of everyone on here being between 5'9" and 6ft, bearded and wearing knock-off oakleys. That's including all the females

Having said that i've met binners and that description doesn't apply

I've also got a good mate on here but he won't bloody tell me his username and i've never worked out who he is! Probably someone I've argued with in a thread at some point though

Over the years I have formed mental pictures of many regular 'forumites' - often very positive despite not having met them in person.

However it's only when I venture outside the relatively safe environs of the annual 'STW Ski & Snowboard threads' that I get a 'wake-up-call' and I'm reminded how just how 'mean spirited' social media can be sometimes.

When that happens I tend to start to recognise individuals more readily when they next appear on new threads and you can frequently anticipate their postings based on whatever agenda they are pushing or their current angst.

Is the tandem a bit of a give away, rather than the boat?

Thought I recognised a chap I bumped into at the TdF in Yorkshire as a forumite.
When asked his user name he just looked at the ground and mumbled something into his beard about not posting much.
🙂
Waves at the bloke with the grey beard and the Pickenflick, from dahn sahf somewhere.

captain - but do mtbers shout - "tandemjeremy" at all people they see on tandems?

Weirdly there is another Jeremy with a tandem who lives somewhere near me!

Possibly, you'll never know and they'll never tell you.

Weirdly there is another Jeremy with a tandem who lives somewhere near me!

There might be a few indicators that differentiate.

Well as I am sure you have guessed, I'm 6' 2", lean with a physique like Bruce Lee. I have a full head of luxuriant hair whic is just beginning to grey. Depending on my look - whether I'm looking more boho or classically clean cut, I've been compared to either Johnny Depp or a young George Clooney. Hope that helps.

Glad I've been keeping a low profile on here to not get mentioned...

Nothing wrong with that, a desire to create an online persona and share the minutiae of your daily troubles online with a large group of fellow sociopaths and anal retentives is not something I would want to cultivate.
Unfortunately the big hitters are mainly argumentative tosspots, the reason they dislike each other is that they are all so similar.
I must admit i forget some of the names of the 'personalities' 🙄 or mix them up but I never understood why educator got so much stick but maybe I missed a crucial thread as I don't read them all.

Never really got the 'big hitters' thing. If you want to appoint yourself the king of a niche internet forum - go for your life. It's not exactly eradicating polio... You won't really impress many people - here or offline.

If the four horseman of the apocalypse appear together on a thread - usually political, you'll never see all 4 of them on a thread about MTBing - I tend to not visit that particular tome again.

I tend to remember usernames of people who live in the same city as me just in case i bump in to them on local trails. It also helps as they may mention trails i may not have known/been on and its useful to give them a shout out for further info.

It was a bit weird working in a bike shop, dealing with folk under their real names and not being aware of their STW ids then seeing some comment on here.

I'm still amused that some folk remember "Onion". I find it hard to recall other folks previous ids. It is strange how some small details of previous stories are retained though.

The Big Hitter thing was only ever a cynic-al joke. Too subtle for some(many) I guess.

As I've explained previously, when a comment can be taken in either a serious or funny manner, I always assume the latter. Junkyard later called this Druidhs Law. For instance, I guess that anyone reading my comments on many of Tons posts would think I had a problem with him, while nothing could be further from the truth.

It would be more subtle and funnier, if some didn't occasionally act as if there was a hierarchy... Strange thing though - almost without exception, most members including those, are incredibly supportive and helpful when others are facing challenges...
