This morning I went to the local recycling centre with some crap in my backpack to dump, chatting to a guy who said I was the first person he'd seen turn up on a bike, and we discussed local riding. He was about to throw some stuff in a skip, I asked what it was as it looked interesting and ended up riding away with an Olympus OM1, OM10 with manual adapter, motor winder, 2x 50mm lenses, 1 28mm lens, 1 65-200 zoom and a flash, all Olympus, all working. Plus a Nikon D80 with 3 lenses. Camera has a known and fixable problem but lenses are fine.
Both camera sets came in LowePro bags.
I feel sad. I'm not even certain if I want them but couldn't see them get taken for landfill.

Bloomin heck that's some good scavenging!

I felt chuffed with a garden shredder (died in a puff of smoke after a month).

The Olympus OM1 has a bit of cult following I believe. Plenty change hands on Ebay.

The LowePro bags will worth a bit as well.

Seems crazy throwing them away.

If I'd have planned anything I would have taken a bigger bag. Luckily one of the Lowepro bags was a mini backpack thing.
Still go to go out again and get the shopping I couldn't squeeze in as planned.

Sounds like you snapped up a real bargain! You displayed great focus and have exposed the developing issue of flash harrys who violate the canons of recycling.

😁🤫 It never went in the skip, straight from the guy dumping it to me. Still got a shifty look from the staff. I mentioned it to the guy who had it and he said he’d just say he’d changed his mind if challenged and we’d meet outside the gate. Surely better for it to be used rather than get shipped out to India to have the circuit boards stripped for their copper?
If that even happens...

Not many circuit boards in one of those old OM1's. 😁 I had one once, sold it on e-bay for buttons, much less than I really wanted or expected TBH. I should have been less scrupulous and just cancelled the auction.

I always get a bit misty over the om10, first camera i owned, saved up about £150 when i was fifteen and got it s/h. Took me a while to get good with it as film and processing was pricey and even when i got the kit to do my own processing i had to do it in the loft which was suitably dark!. Ive been looking on fleabay but cant really justify the nostalgia which is driving my desire... good luck!

Marcus7 my dad keeps talking about selling his OM10. If you like I can find out what he wants for it?

I understand him not wanting to be arsed trying to sell it, but surely a charity shop would have been a better way of offloading it? Very odd.

He said it was his late Dad’s and couldn’t be arsed to sell it and charity shops can’t be bothered with anything other than clothes these days...
As a known camera user I’ve been given loads of stuff based on ”Dad wouldn’t want it to be thrown away”. I’ve sold it on eBay, deducted the fees and given them the money to put to charity of their choice or beer, it’s their call.
One woman was giving away a pile of her husbands camera gear, when I told her what it was worth she had a shocked looked as she left. I got the impression he may have been economical with the truth when discussing what his hobby cost.
Not that that would ever happen with cycling...

My daughter just used a D80 for her photography GCSE. Teacher did not know how to use it. She got an A, plus won a £20 prize from the local photography club. Camera with 50mm lens cost less than £100.... OP, I am jealous!

I was, sort of still an OM fan, with a couple of OM1s, an Om2 and an OM10 and quite a few lens, unfortunately none now working, with parts broken that are unobtainable. I’m holding on just in case but now haven’t used film for two plus years and struggling to imagine going back to it.

That’s my problem. I’ve just thrown out over 1000 sheets of slides from my early days. I can’t believe the faff of looking at them.
Digital and Lightroom for the win.
