I have a choice of a Sony A200 or a Nikon D40. Similar lenses and prices. Whuch one and why? My main requirement is decent piccy A4 print and fast (quick?) AF.

I like my A200 - which I always considered to be better than my wife's Nikon D70 but not quite as good as her newish D80 (but a lot less money) Never tried a D40 - sorry.
The basic pros for each might be

A200
Value for money
Image stabilisation in body

D40
Lots of Nikon lenses to choose from

The d40 has a quick autofocus in really well lit situations, but inside at daytime, its not as fast as one would hope. Dont get me wrong, its not slow by anymeans, but sometimes you feel it takes a fraction too long. Overall, takes lovely pictures and i would defiantely recommend shooting in RAW, then using a program like Adobe lightroom to edit them. Prints fantastic quality photos on a4, not too bad on a3

Aldiphoto use them for great quality 34p 8X12 (basically a4)

Highly recommend the camera but i'm sur eyou cant go wrong with either

also remeber the d40 has no motor built in for the lens...so the autofocus wont work with the entire range/older lens. I *think* all new nikon lens have the motor built into them, so should have the autofocus feature.

Below is some info on the lens compatibilty.

Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts
Type G or D AF Nikkor
1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported, 2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus, 3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus, 4) Other AF Nikkor*2/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Colour Matrix Metering II, 5): Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster
*1. IX Nikkor lenses can not be used
*2. Excluding lenses for F3AF

Basically any lens that has AF-S, AF-I in its name....is completely compatible, and what you need to buy if you want autofocus
